Maybe the Jaguars aren't so bad at pass rushing

I'm kidding, they really are, but I did see this article on the Sports Illustrated site. The full article is here, but here are a couple important quotes:

"There have been just 521 sacks in 7,630 pass attempts so far this year, among the lowest rates of sack-success in NFL history, and a far cry from the days when the likes of Deacon Jones dominated overmatched offensive tackles and made life a living hell for quarterbacks."

"The NFL itself deserves much of the blame for emasculating defenses and rendering defensive players second-rate citizens on the field of play .... There was the "re-emphasis" of pass interference that followed the 2003 playoffs. And, just this year, there's the ridiculous "Tom Brady Rule." Between these two officiating efforts, it seems defenders can barely even touch receivers or quarterbacks without getting flagged and fined. Defensive linemen are getting a little sack-shy in the process. Like cattle surrounded by an electric fence, pass-rush specialists have realized that their game has boundaries, boundaries it didn't have in Deacon's day."

The Chiefs set a record for pass-rushing incompetence last season, and the Jaguars seem to be mounting a serious challenge for a new record. Obviously this is only a very minor part of the Jaguars' struggles with getting to the quarterback, and obviously other teams like the Giants and Colts still do just fine these days. I guess it just makes me wish I'd been alive and cognizant of the NFL during the rough and tumble good ol' days.

This topic also gives me a chance to create a poll about Derrick Harvey, since he is the face of the future on the defensive line for the Jaguars. No opinions from me here - I just want to see where everyone stands.

 	<fieldset class="poll-box">
  <legend>Poll</legend>

What is your opinion of Derrick Harvey?

The Eraser

Greetings and Salutations fellow fans,

I'm new to this so bare with me while I become adjusted, wait for it.....there ADJUSTED. I love this site, I've been a long time Jaguars.com reader but only recently discovered this website. I think it's a cool way to interact with fans just as passionate about Jag football as myself. I'm not quite sure what my postings will cover, but lets hope you like 'em.

Can anybody really blame David for audibling into a quick pass at the line when he sees 8 guys in the box on most plays? I found it amazing that we were still running slants as our audible pass play, which was our signature pass play last year. Remember, how defenses sat on that route the all of last season because they knew that was the only real passing threat we posed. Are there not any other hot routes to switch into if needed? However, it sounds like we'll be seeing less audibles this week. All in all I say give the rock to MJD, early and often to set up those oh so sweet plays to MSW and Holt.

So will the play of Thomas this past week forever silence the critics of Monroe being in the starting lineup at LT? Didn't Thomas give up a sack to KVB, his first of the season? I know I was one of the guys early on, who wanted Thomas in the lineup because I was looking for instant results but we see where that gets us. I think this rookie class has performed beyond expectations. We're laying the groundwork for our future for the first time this in ages. You know deep down you look at this group of Monroe, Britton, Knighton, Cox, M. Thomas, Dillard that you get the sense of better things to come.

Basically we don't have the players to compete at a high level. Our offense is coming along, but we're still to raw that unit to carry the team. The defense...well the defense makes me sad....very sad. The once proud unit got old and broken right underneath our noses. It's going to take a couple of drafts to bring us back to where we once were, if we can every get there again. Does anybody else feel that Russell and Nelson should have a fight to the death to determine who should remain on the team? I started laughing when I read that they used to call Nelson "The Eraser" at Florida. "The Eraser", really? If he's "The Eraser" then all our opponents must be writing with ink.

You Can't Draft Ticket Sales

While we scramble for solutions to the ticket sales drought in Jacksonville, a certain bewildered population of nearby football fans proffer the argument that drafting Tebow would be a cure all.

Well, if that theory were true, then certainly the signing of legendary Brett Favre by the Vikings, as a sure bet to propel them deep into the playoffs (which looks like it might actually be happening), would have the same effect there. And his revered status in the mid-West would cure the Vikings ticket sales woes, too. Right?

This according to PFT, speaks to the contrary:
"According to John Holler of VikingUpdate.com, 4,000 tickets remain for November 15 against Detroit, and 3,500 are unsold for the following Sunday against Seattle."

"So even with the Favre factor and a 7-1 start to the season, the Vikings will have to hustle in order to lift the local blackout for games."

You mean, one player doesn't cure ticket sales? That's right. One player, unless he buys all the remaining tickets for friends, will not cure ticket sales. The local community cures. And if Father Time isn't cramming the stadium in the town of his former rival, then it's doubtful that an out-of-position paladin can work miracles here in Jacksonville. Amen.

Being the Devil's advocate-my view on the Jack Del Rio watch

OK; compared the head coach to the Devil is a bit too strong-in many; many ways; but after the loss against the Titans many Jaguars fans including here on this place called for his head on a plate..again. I still don't get that reaction although I share some of the concerns about him. But I still think he can still lead this team to great things. I collected some points which are showing why I think the reaction and the chant to fire him is a bit too early (at least to say). And I offer a maybe unusual way to helping judge his coaching in this season.

1. Talent of the current team

I know you might bored about this; but let's face it. This roster is not on the same level with the elite teams yet on regular basis. We saw they can beat or play close games with good teams (Colts-Week 1; Texans Week 3)But this roster is still having huge holes. If you don't beliveme; then please think about who are the guys from this team who would start in a top teams of the league? I found 3: Maurice Jones-Drew; Rashean Mathis; and Justin Durant. I think 9-10 guys of this team could make the roster of elite teams (Just to name a few: David Garrard; Daryl Smith; Greg Jones; Josh Scobee; he might could be the kicker at elite teams; and from the rookies Eben Britton, Terrance Knighton, and Mike Thomas) But this is not so much. We have major problems because there is simply no one can rush the passer. The Jaguars are so desperate thta poor Daryl Smith is the guy who was sent to blitz lately..Pass-protection is another area where the Jaguars lack talent yet. Although the Jaguars have good corners-the safety area is still a mess. Maybe we have one legitim starter at Gerald Alexander; but other then him I see no solution. And the Jags claimed 5 or 6 safeties and corners during the offseason. Is that Jack's fault? Is his fault that those who are drafted to get the QB are cannot do that, no matter who protect it(a 4th LT activated from the practice squad and the Jags are dead last at sacks...They have 5 sack in 7 games games, no one has more then 1...I'm 100% sure that he teach his players tackle well. I sure because he is very upset about that part I see and hear on and from him. If the jags has the the talent; and Jack is still there yet; he will turn this group of people(I'm mean here defense) back to the top 10. And by the way; which part is the backbone of the defense? The linebackers. I don't wanna steal credits from Mark Duffner for that but I think Jack's hand is one reason why the are the most reliable group of the defense.

2. Don't forget what he archived

I watched the Green Bay-Minnesota game, and I just thought; why is that upset about Favre? Now he is the enemy because he is on another team(Yeah I know the way he got to Minnesota was not the gentleman-like that is for sure and he is currently quite overhyped too says the least...). But he was one of the key of that team's success for years. He lead and won a Superbowl. And although Jack has not that great record and success-but facts are facts his 6 year was not exactly bad times. From 4 of his previous 6 years as a head coach this team was contender to the playoffs. 2 of them he went to there. The first appearance was a small disaster because of his choice to start the injured Byron Leftwich instead of Garrard-yeah that is true. But the second attempt, his team did something no other team done in NFL history beat the Steelers back-to back in 1 season in their home field. Then his team was very close to defeat the New England Patriots in their home too. And I tell you if the jags would win that game, they would have represented to AFC on Superbowl XLI...It's a shame that the window of opportunity closed on that night. We wait and hope to the next opening which will come soon (even with Jack as head coach)

3. Selection of coaches

That is I agree a tricky subject. Jack had good (Mike Smith, Joe Decamilis; Mike Tice) and bad (Gregg Williams; Donnie Henderson; and "fan favourite-including mine" Ted Monachino) choices in his career as a head coach. I'm not sure about the most talked about coach these days; offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.Yeah he blew the last game with not handing the ball to Maurice (if Jack ordered really run in the very early phases of the game that would raise other questions for another topic) ; but no matter how good Maurice is-you must ta least try to be balanced with the run and the pass. Yeah Koetter is obsessed with the pass; but he has a reason to that. In the recent past, when the jaguars running game was feared in the NFL; the Steelersand DC legend Dick Lebeau had the cure load the box. If the Jaguars use Maurice (it seems the only effective runner of the team) that would happen with him again; and don't expect so often a mistackle parade like the Titans defense showed on those 2 beautiful TDs. Which why the Jags must use more the passing game then the running game in my opinion. Or the most ideal would be throw and run about 50-50% But to go back to my point; I think most of the Jaguars current coaches are good guys-I think Monachinois the only one with who's absence is something I would have no problem...Yeah Joe Decamilis and Gregg Williams is left because they andJack were not on the same page. Specially in Joe"s case that is something I really sorry. But If I look at the Jaguars coaching staff jack made expect one guy good selections.

4. How Jack's fate as a coach should be judged in my opinion

This years is will be played by under the word: rebuilding. No matter how tempting is our schedule; most likely the jaguars won't make it. which might come good to. Don't look mad at this point; I don't like to see the jaguars lose either. But they can concentrate to build the new guys to the team; can focus who are the players who cannot help (My candidates are at this point includes Reggie Nelson; Brian Russell; And maybe 1 or 2 guys who are still on the roster of he 2008 draft sadly); and in the end having a top 16 or maybe even Top 10 offense! And of course the basic goals: playing better as a team and try to reach the 7-9/8-8 record. If Jack and his team reach the most of these goals or all; he can and I think must stay as head coach and my trust and support will remain on him.

But I give you another good example to watch for. You know the most thing (other then the passrush-pass protection problems) of the '09 jaguars is that if they lose; I know that around the 3 Quarter; maybe even on the 2nd. They didn't produce close ball games when they have a bad day or the opponent is the better team on that day. This bothers me. And in this area; We have luck to see what happens this year. Because other then 2 (or maybe just 1) opponents (week 15-16; games against the Colts and Patriots-although this team can play close games with indy even if they are not so good) there are no unbeatable opponents of the schedule. So we can see how the Jags lose if (and most likely they will lose games) how the Jaguars will handle the opponents in the second half of the season. Remember; many expert said it that the rebuilding most show the first consistent signs of improvement of the second part of the season. Well I can't wait for that. Because if the jaguars will lose for example against the 49ers or the Jets or the Dolphins in a very big battle; within 2-3 points; in nail biters-I say Ok Jack you can continue your work in 2010. But if we saw the same thing we saw on last sunday or against Seattle or in most parts of the Arizona game; then it is time for another head coach to take over.

So; I stick in the rest of the season with my "patience for rebuilding" point of view. I will trust in Jack; and(unless he not showing consistent signs in the second half in an other direction) I will defending him even if he must accept defeat on gameday until the last game. After that I made my judgement. I think Gene Smith is also looking Jack's situation like I do. I think the conclusion will be the same. Jack has 9 games (more then half of the season) to make sure t me; to you; to the ownership that this team goes the right direction under him as head coach.I think after the final game in Cleveland; we will all know what is next. Until that time; remain critical; but please stop calling for his head. Please stop push the alarm button after every lost game. I will keep saying over and over again my word for the season: Patience. And that is what every Jaguars fan who care about this team should do!

Zoltan Paksa

3k from Turf Show Times back for some mock help

Hey Jags fans. I'm back again and this time I've got the questions. You guys might remember I stopped by before the Jags-Rams game. I would have liked to have prodded for some more questions, but my wife went into labor and I ended up missing the game. Priorities schmiorities, I say.
Anyway, I'm the de facto draftnik over at Turf Show Times, and you guys helped me when I was putting together my 2009 mocks, so I figured I stop by and see what you guys are feeling mid-season.

What prospects are getting hyped here at BCC? What positions are you guys hurting at? Obviously RB and OT are off the board, but what other positions to you guys feel comfortable at? Hook a brother/new father up!

It is time to say good-bye

For those of you that have read my previous articles, I have always been a supporter of Jack Del Rio, from the off-season to the bye-week. I have always found the positives of every win and loss, wanting to believe that Jack is the man for the job, unfortunately I believe his time has come to leave us.

Jack has been a great coach, building this team up for the terrible state it was in when he came to the job, and is runs at greatness, however I think he has reached his limit in Jacksonville. I believed Jack was the right man for the job earlier in the season, and I'm not going back on what I said, or believed then, but now things have changed. Our last three games have been terrible, lets just face it.

The Seahawk loss was sickening to say the least, our defense well... we didn't have one, and our offense well...we didn't have one. Our "victory" over St. Louis was barely that, almost losing to a 0-5 team, with MJD being the only bright spot. Finally we have the lost yesterday, where were actually lost to an 0-6 team, and again MJD was the only bright spot. Jack's coaching has not been effective in developing this team, and yes I know we have 7 rookies on the active roster, with our number 1,2,3,3,5 starting.

Our defense is terrible, with Nelson being the WORST player on defense, and please don't tell me he is improving, he has had 3 years to improve ok, and if he hasn't yet he won't. Our FS and SS are our biggest problems, we you consider they are the Jacks of all trades, stuffing the run, and pass coverage, and supporting all other positions.

Our offense has the talent and the potential, but it doesn't have the coaching, Koetter doesn't use the tools he has at his disposal. The passing game is secondary to our rushing game, not the other way around like Dirk sees it. I'm not attacking our WR corp at all, they are the best group have have had since Jimmy Smith. Holt, Sims-Walker, Thomas and Dillard are great, but our strength lies in MJD.

Through all this we have Jack, just standing on the sidelines doing nothing to improve this team. If I have to watch one more of his "oh well we lost, it was good, we need to improve" press conferences I'm going to scream. Does he even care anymore? In all reality we knew this would be a rebuilding year, but is Jack the one to do it? I remember there was an article a month or so ago that brought up the same point but I disagreed, will know I see the reason behind the arguement. Jack has stalled, stuck in neutral, at an impass, however you want to call it, he has had his time here, he brought us to the playoffs, but he can't keep us there and thats the problem.

Jack is a great coach and I am thankful for all that he has done for this team, but its time to move on. I wish him all the best of luck, but he is no longer the best for Jacksonville. Jack can no longer direct and lead this team the way he did two seasons ago. We need someone with that fire in their belly and their heart, someone that can shape this young team into the dominate force in the AFC south and the NFL as a whole. It is time to move on, and that means without Jack than so be it, and should he turn this team around than great, and I can say when I;m wrong, but until that happens we need someone new at the helm.

Jaguars' Coach Jack Del Rio: Weighed, Measured and Found Wanting

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio walks the sideline in the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009. The Titans won 30-13 for their first win of the season.

(AP Photo/John Russell)

I found myself struggling to decide which was more nauseating: the Vince Young love fest from Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker or the Jaguars. So I tossed a coin.

Let me retract all the good things I wrote about this team after their earlier win over the Tennessee Titans. Everything they said on the field that day has been found to be false. There was nothing new to see in Nashville, just the same old Jaguars after a bye. I guess the "roller coaster of love" mantra would be better to use for the remainder of the season.

I am happy for Vince. I don't want to see anyone succumb to failure apart from their inability to perform on the field. Given the opportunity, he silenced the echoes of bad decisions and a lack of confidence to lead the Titans to their first victory of the season. The team rallied around him and at games end were obviously happy not only to win but that Vince was a part of it.

That being said, let's not pretend that it was Vince Young that won this game. There is nothing gaudy about what he did going 15\18, 125 yards and one TD (114.1 passer rating). His rushing stats aren't even that great with 12 attempts for 30 yards.

However, Young did not throw an INT, though he deserved one, no thanks to Derek Cox. He also did on the ground what Steve McNair once did: He got the yards when the Titans needed it. On two scoring drives Young managed just enough to convert third downs.

Through the air he was just as effective. He managed to get them out of the shadow of their own end zone. He ensured the defense had to respect to pass which eventually would setup the run. He eluded the rush and delivered the ball to open receivers. In summary, Young managed the game in order for the actual talent to control the game.

As for Jacksonville, Garrard awoke the memories of his epic failure three years ago. He threw two interceptions, one which was a badly overthrown ball for Mike Walker which is a touchdown had it been completed, and finished with a quarterback rating of 35.9. Amazingly he actually rates worse than the 53.1 he put up in 2006.

But David is the easy scape goat. He surely didn't play his best game, but part of that thanks goes to the Titans defense and the Jaguars pass protection. Sacked four times and hit more times than a pinata, you couldn't blame him if his focus was on the powder blue jerseys circling his wagon.

Who then is to blame?

Reggie Nelson

The touchdown pass to Nate Washington could have been defended. If you were blind you would've thought the pass was a beautiful throw to the back corner of the end zone. At game's end the announcers were still fawning over the play. It wasn't a fade. The ball was fairly flat but because Nelson was beat off the line and didn't look back for the ball soon enough, Young was able to throw it like a timing route.

The pinnacle of his failures were the two big runs by Chris Johnson. Here he showed why so many are down on his tackling. Someone needs to tell Reggie that quick runners won't be as susceptible to you trying to cut our their legs. I know this was his first start at CB and the demands are different but Reggie's overall play continues to digress.

Offensive Line

I won't spend too much time here as we know this group is expected to undulate due to inexperience. They opened holes for MJD. But they just killed David. This group is young and coming off injuries but today was simply unacceptable. No matter how good (or bad) your QB may be, he can't take that type of beating and be expected to focus on the field.

Dirk Koetter

Did I really watch a game in which the Jaguars did not attempt a run until mid-way through the second quarter. And when I did it went to Mike Thomas? That isn't a cut at Mike. The WR end around has worked great for the Jaguars and it netted 7 yards. The problem is that it was the first run of the game and brought the Jaguars offensive total to zero yards. Yes...that is zero as in 0.

Series 1: three passes.

Series 2: five passes (even with the aid of two Titans penalties they go "three" and out)

Series 3: one run, two passes (the second pass an INT thanks to a pick by the official)

Series 4: one run (TD)

Series 5: nine passes, three runs

Koetter's obvious fear of the Titans run defense wound up giving the Titans a 2:1 TOP advantage at game's end. They went into the half only having had the ball for seven minutes and 52 seconds.

I understand David shredded Tennessee in Jacksonville but not getting your best player involved until late in the second quarter is mind boggling. Part of the poor play of the offensive line has to fall on Koetter. If David isn't being given the time to throw you need to make adjustments.

And why did you give it to Rashad Jennings on third and three!!!!!?????

Defense

Both long runs by C.J. should never have happened. The failure to tackle was a big reason why the Titans were able to pull away. The inability to make Young uncomfortable ensured the Titans offense would find their groove and feed off their emotions. You simply can't let Tennessee start the game with a seven minute and fourteen second drive.

Allowing your opponent a 53% third down percentage is also a major black eye. Adding insult to injury is that some of those were converted by Young and LenDale White. This was the game in which your best was to be considerably better than their best.

David Garrard

He doesn't get a free pass. He had some gems (a third and twenty to Jarett Dillard) but he missed a wide open Sims-Walker that would have been a TD when they really needed the score. He made some terrible reads (screen to MJD) and held the ball too long (pump and go to Ernest Wilford). Yes David was abused but there were plays to be made and at his cost they have to be made.

Jack Del Rio

What can we say, Jack? You are two and five coming off a bye. Players may make plays but the coach is responsible for preparation. This team was to be 5-3 going into a big game in New York. Yet again the Titans have spoiled any momentum you could bring to this team and the fan base. This isn't the same Titans team that lost 59-0 but they were lead by a pedestrian quarterback who was ripe to to rattled.

This was embarrassing, Jack.

- Brian Fullford

Diamonds in the Rough: Players to Watch for in 2010 Draft

Alright, I wanted to give BCC readers a glimpse of a little thing i've been working on. Its for the Draft, and talks about some players that are not well known or under-the-radar but can play some football. I listed the players by the rankings given at MockingTheDraft.com. I will be doing two more future updated installations, one will be about Offensive gems and the other Defensive gems. Thankfully, more players can be included because of splitting the two installations. Quality over Quantity of course.

Upon talking about these guys, I would really love to hear about some other people who could fall to us in later rounds yet play at a level much higher than the round they are projected to play. The descriptions of the players will also come from MockingTheDraft.com. Remember about the Juniors, this is if they opt for the Draft. Enjoy!

Quan Sturdivant Tony Pike Noel Devine

QB

2nd best Senior: Tony Pike | 6'6, 230 pounds | Cincinnati

"Pike has deceptive quickness and athleticism, which he uses nicely in the pocket to elude the pass rush. He has good presence and doesn't mind stepping up in pressure. Given his height and release point, Pike rarely gets passes knocked down. He's finally added weight to his frame this offseason, bulking up from 215 pounds. That should make him more durable. Puts a good zip on his passes and can place them in tight spots. Always keeps his eyes down field. If Pike can speed up the mental parts of the passing game -- reading defenses and getting rid of the ball quickly -- look out."

4th best Senior Tim Hiller | 6'5, 228 pounds | Western Michigan

"A classic statuesque pocket passer with good arm strength, Hiller looks very similar to Drew Bledsoe. His release is really quick and fluid, which is somewhat rare among today's college quarterbacks. He throws a really nice ball and seems to have a good sense of timing. Receivers routinely able to catch Hiller's passes in stride. That helped Hiller total 36 touchdown passes last season to only 10 interceptions. How he converts from the spread to the pros will ultimately tell his story." Here's a guy that recently has grown on me, He's not a Mcnabb, he's a Bledsoe.

5th best Senior: Dan LeFevour | 6'3, 228 pounds | Central Michigan

"At this point, LeFevour is kind of a poor man's Colt McCoy. He's a good dual threat player and was a sleeper Heisman Trophy candidate entering last season. Injuries held him back some, though. When he's healthy, LeFevour has a good release and can deliver the ball all over the field. He has a tendency to run too soon and will need to become more disciplined in his decision making." One of Surteal's Most Favored Status.

RB

4th best Junior:

| 5'8, 176 pounds | West Virginia

"Although Devine might be undersized, he's an electric playmaker. If Devine can get into space, it's hard to bring him down. He's quick, elusive and has another gear in the open field. He'll never be a lead back, but he shouldn't be judged as such. Devine has special athletic ability and deserves a chance to showcase it." He's a interesting player that has some similarities to Maurice Jones-Drew, his height and his potency.

7th best Junior: Evan Royster | 6'1, 215 pounds | Penn State

"Following a breakthrough 2008 season in which he had 1,236 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns, Royster is quickly becoming a top running back prospect. He’s hard to take down in the open field and runs with a lot of determination. Pretty solid as a receiver, even though he’s not a top target in Penn State’s pass offense."

WR

5th best Junior: Demaryius Thomas | 6'3, 230 pounds | Georgia Tech

"Although Georgia Tech now employs the run-option offense, Thomas is a solid target. He's got incredible athleticism and uses his strong frame well. He'll continue to fly under the radar with the Yellow Jackets, but he has starting potential at the next level." Not Calvin Johnson, but can still be productive.

8th best Senior: Naaman Roosevelt | 6'0, 187 pounds | Buffalo

"Roosevelt is a skinny receiver who has flashed explosive play in college. He runs crisp routes and has some good moves in the open field. His size lets defenders easily jam him at the line. If he can bulk up to about 200 pounds without giving up his speed, Roosevelt could be a solid option at the next level."

10th best Senior: Kerry Meier | 6'3, 220 pounds | Kansas

"Meier is a converted quarterback and a big target. He plays a lot like a tight end and doesn't have great speed. However, he can really attack the seam and has good hands. He's a solid third-down receiver. Good upside." Think of a Poor Man's Dallas Clark version of a WR.

TE

4th best Senior: Ed Dickson | 6'5, 243 pounds | Oregon

"A natural athlete, Dickson is still working on the nuances of the position. He's a good quick-twitch athlete who gets off the line nicely. He easily makes plays over the top and has the ability to stretch defenses. If he can improve his physicality, especially when going up against athletic linebackers, he could move higher in these rankings."

8th best Senior: Michael Hoomanawanui | 6'3, 270 pounds | Illinois

"Re-watching Illinois games this offseason, Hoomanawanui really sticks out. He plays a lot like Alge Crumpler. He's a big player with underrated athleticism and speed. He's a solid route runner, but shouldn't be used deep often. His size alone makes him a above-average blocker, but he needs to improve his technique."

OT

7th best Senior: Jason Fox | 6'6, 314 pounds | Miami

"Fox is a converted tight end who displays a good first step to the outside. He moves to the second level well and locates and gets to defenders nicely. He's improving as a run blocker but clearly needs to continue working on his strength. Fox has some good tools, but must continue to work on the nuances of the position. He has some added value because of his versatility playing tackle and guard." Versatility is a plus.

12th best Senior: Ed Wang | 6'5, 310 pounds | Virginia Tech

"A converted tight end, Wang is one of the more athletic senior tackles in the nation. He's played both tackle positions showing continued improvement in all aspects. Where he needs to get much better is his physical play. If he becomes more of a mauler, he'll be a starter-level player."

Guard

5th best Senior: Sergio Render | 6'3, 314 pounds | Virginia Tech

"A lengthy, hard working interior lineman, Render excels in the run game. He consistently gets good hand positioning to move around defenders. Anchors well at the point of attack and can handle power rushers. Not an amazing athlete, but he's pretty good on the move. If he doesn't get hurt, he'll be a four-year starter at guard for Virginia Tech and is a two-time all-conference selection."

Center

4th best Senior: Ted Larsen | 6'2, 300 pounds | North Carolina State

"Larsen is a converted defensive tackle and has shown his versatility by playing both guard and center for the Wolfpack. He's an effort player with solid fundamentals. Larsen consistently stays low in his stance with his knees bent. He does a really good job with speed rushers and can redirect nicely. He's not much of a finisher in the running game, but he works hard." One of the guys i'ved eye-balled for a while.

3rd best Senior: Eric Olsen | 6'4, 305 pounds | Notre Dame

"Olsen has successfully moved from guard to center as a senior and does a nice job handling the line audibles. He's a solid in-line blocker who can handle tackles on his own. Olsen might be best at guard, but he really doesn't do anything wrong as a center." Versatility in the Interior is good, but I think Ted Larsen is better.

DE

6th best Senior: Corey Wootton | 6'7, 270 pounds | Northwestern

"At his size, Wootton shouldn't have the quickness and lateral movement he does. His closing speed is scary and his long arms help him get great leverage. Wootton would be ranked higher in these rankings, but he's still recovering from a severe knee injury suffered in last season's bowl game. If he's healthy, watch out." Is he the next Reggie Hayward?

4th best Junior: Greg Romeus | 6'5, 265 pounds | Pittsburgh

"During parts of the 2008 season, Romeus looked like he was already ready for the NFL. He really shined against Iowa and Oregon State, notching four of his nine sacks for the year. He's a strong athlete who should only get bigger."

18th best Senior: C.J. Wilson | 6'4, 272 pounds | East Carolina

"A natural defensie end prospect for the next level, Wilson has good size and ability. He's put together two good seasons in a row. In 2008, he had 10.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for a loss. He's solid against the run and has good enough athleticism to make it at the next level."

DT

5th best Senior: Vince Oghobaase | 6'6, 305 pounds | Duke

"At 6-foot-6, 305 pounds, Oghobaase has an athletic and quick build. He's a solid gap-shooting tackle who could probably make it as a 3-4 defensive end. If he gets drafted by a 4-3 team, Oghobaase will have to get much stronger."

6th best Junior: Jarvis Jenkins | 6'4, 305 pounds | Clemson

"Jenkins quickly became one of the nation's top interior defenders last year when he finished with 10 tackles for loss. He's another player just beginning to come near his potential and has a bright future."

9th best Senior: Geno Atkins | 6'1, 290 pounds | Georgia

"A strong competitor, Atkins uses excellent leverage as a one-gap defensive tackle. He was routinely double teamed in 2008, but still managed to have a solid year. Atkins consistently collapses the pocket and should only get better as he gets stronger."

OLB

3rd best Junior: Bruce Carter | 6'3, 230 pounds | North Carolina

"Like many junior defenders for the 2010 NFL Draft, Carter's biggest weakness is his size. He needs to add more strength, particularly in his upper body. Carter should only get better as a pass rusher after getting five sacks last season."

6th best Senior: Clinton Snyder | 6'4, 235 pounds | Stanford

"An effort player for the Cardinal, Snyder has good size and speed. He's a very good tackler in the open field and is known as an intelligent player."

8th best Senior: Keenan Clayton | 6'2, 220 pounds | Oklahoma

"After successfully transitioning from safety to outside linebacker last season, Clayton was third on OU with 84 tackles. He runs a 4.5 40-yard dash and should only get better as he learns the position more. Definitely one to watch."

MLB

4th best Junior: Quan Sturdivant | 6'2, 235 pounds | North Carolina

"The 2008 national leader in unassisted tackles with 87, Sturdivant can make just about any play asked of a linebacker. Sturdivant played on the weak side last season and moves to the middle to make way for highly athletic sophomore Zach Brown."

8th best Senior: Boris Lee | 6'0, 235 pounds | Troy

"A tackling machine, Lee has led the Trojans in that category the past two seasons. He had 126 last season to go with 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions. He has the athleticism to line up inside in the 3-4 or outside in a 4-3."

CB

4th best Senior: Ras-I Dowling | 6'2, 200 pounds | Virginia

"Few cornerbacks in the nation combine Dowling's physical prescence and pure skill as a cover man. Corners his size don't come around too often and Dowling should only get better."

6th best Senior: Myron Lewis | 6'2, 205 pounds | Vanderbilt

"Few cornerbacks can be considered sack artists, but Lewis could be. He had five last year to go with five interceptions, seven tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles. Lewis might not have great speed, but he does things most cornerbacks cannot."

13th best Senior: Walter Thurmond | 6'0, 180 pounds | Oregon

"Many considered Thurmond a better player than former teammate Jairus Byrd, who was taken in the second round of this year's draft. Injuries slowed Thurmond some last year, but he still led the Pac-10 in interceptions. If anyone could rise up these rankings during the year, it could be Thurmond."

FS

5th best Senior: Jordan Lake | 6'2, 205 pounds | Baylor

"Lake has been highly productive the last two seasons, totaling more than 200 tackles, 18 passes defended and five interceptions. He's a big hitter in the secondary who could be a great special teams player."

6th best Senior: Antonio Baker | 5'11, 208 pounds | Louisiana Tech

"Entering his third year as the Bulldogs' free safety, Baker has more than 300 career tackles and is a consistent performer. He's an intelligent player who makes the adjustment calls for Louisiana Tech and is alway in the middle of the action."

SS

4th best Senior: Barry Church | 6'2, 219 pounds | Toledo

"In each of his three years as a starter, Chuch has been named to the Mid-American Conference first team. Although teams avoided him more in 2008, Church still finished with 93 tackles and three forced fumbles. He's sound against the run and the pass."

4th best Junior: Reshad Jones | 6'2, 212 pounds | LSU

"Jones burst onto the national scene in his first year as a starter for the Bulldogs. He's a fluid athlete with the ability to make plays all over the field."

7th best Senior: Josh Pinkard | 6'1, 215 pounds | Southern California

"Impressively, Pinkard can play both safety and cornerback. He does both adequately. He'll be an asset to some team because of his versatility. Medical checks could drop Pinkard down draft boards, though." Versatility makes this a very interesting prospect.

KR/PR

3rd Best Junior FS: Chris Culliver | 6'0, 190 pounds | South Carolina - Culliver has excellent speed and is one of the top kick returners in the nation.

6th Best Senior WR: Jeremy Williams | 6'1, 205 pounds | Tulane

"When healthy, Williams is an excellent possession receiver. He played in five games last season, averaging 87 receiving yards per contest, before breaking his hand and missing the rest of the season. Williams shows good hands and can make people miss after catching the ball. He's also a very good kick returner."

George Wrighster's Week 7 Review and Week 8 preview

Week 7: The Blowouts -The Jags were on a bye and Rashean Mathis had finger surgery. No news on Jags in Week 7 review but the Jags are back in action this week against the Titans. This will be a good test because both teams are coming off a bye. The Titans should rebound because their talent is better than 0-6, but Jags should still come out with the victory.

Vince Young to start Sunday

I'm watching ESPN right now and it just scrolled across the bottom ticker as breaking news. The Tennessean is reporting that Vince Young will be the starter on Sunday against the Jaguars. Whether this is a good thing or not is debatable, although I believe that this is good news.
Where the Rookies stand

After 7 weeks of football including a bye week for the Jaguars lets see where the Jaguars rookies stand after 6 games played.

1st Round Pick: - Eugene Monroe (LT)

Games Played: 5

Games Started: 4 (Ranks 5th among Rookie OT's)

Sacks Allowed: 4 (Ranks 1st among Rookie OT's)

Analysis: Overall compared to the other OT's selected in the 1st round Monroe has been middle of the road. Monroe has allowed 4 sacks, while Oher and J. Smith have only allowed 2 sacks apiece (A. Smith has yet to play a game). Monroe has shinned at times but also shown some weakness which is typical of a rookie OT. Oher has easily been the best OT selection so far but J. Smith and E. Monroe have also been effective at times and shown their value. Monroe has 4 starts already to J. Smith's 2 so we may see Monroe grow a lot faster due to the fact that he is getting more time on the field.

2nd Round Pick: Eben Britton (RT)

Games Played: 5

Games Started: 5 (Ranks 4th among Rookie OT's)

Sacks Allowed: 3 (Ranks Tied for 2nd among Rookie OT's)

Analysis: Britton, like Monroe, was thrown into the starting job on Day 1. The combination of Monroe and Britton have allowed 7 sacks between them and they rank 1st and 2nd in sacks allowed, not a catagory we want them to be leading. Britton though, like Monroe, have started most of the Jaguars games this season and have faced some tough DL in there first few games such as Dwight Freeny and Mario Williams. Britton has also started a lot of games and the hope is that like Monroe he will start to gain more and more experience and settle down. Overall though the Jaguars two rookie OT's have allowed more sacks then desirable but there has been improvement.

3rd Round Pick: Terrance Knighton (DT)

Games Played: 6

Total Tackles: 11 (Ranked 30th among Rookies)

Solo: 8 / Assists: 3

Sacks: 0 (Ranked Tied for Last among Rookies)

Analysis: Knighton's statistics are deceiving because his play has been a lot better then his rankings show. Knighton has come in and been able to help the Jaguars defense line play a lot better then most thought they would. Though the Jaguars rank 20th in Rush Defense, everyone who watches Knighton play knows that he has shown great potential and will be a fixture on the line for years to come.

3rd Round Pick: Derek Cox (CB)

Games Played: 6

Games Started: 6

Tackles: 34 (28 / 6) (Ranks 5th among Rookies)

Interceptions: 2 (Ranks Tied 2nd among Rookies)

Fumble Recovery: 1

Analysis: Derek Cox has been under pressure since the moment he was draft. So far my opinion of Cox is that he has shown he has great potential which can be seen by his 2 interceptions and flashes of athleticism but at the same time he is a weakness in our pass defense. The reason for a majority of tackles is due to the fact that he is often tackling receivers who have just caught a pass around him. He has often been exploited by opposing QBs which can been seen in our disastrous Pass Defense rankings. Overall though Cox has shown great potential and hopefully with some more exposure he will be able to fix his problems and become the star CB that we all hope he will be.

4th Round Pick: Mike Thomas (WR)

Receptions: 14 (Ranks 12th among Rookies)

Receiving Yards: 121 (Ranks 15th among Rookies)

Kick Return Yards: 188 (Ranks 8th among Rookies)

Analysis: There is no denying that Mike Thomas has been a spark on offense for the Jaguars. With the emergence of Sims-Walker, Thomas has fallen perfectly into our #3 receiving spot over the last few weeks and is slowly getting more and more comfortable as seen by his receptions and yards which continue to climb each week. Thomas also offers the Jaguars the ability to run reverses which open up the middle for MJD. Overall Thomas' statistics led many to believe that he is an average rookie receiver but since missing the first two games, he has be one of the primary reasons for the great play by the Jaguars receivers over the last few weeks.

5th Round Pick: Jarett Dillard (WR)

Receptions: 3 (Tied for 27th among Rookies)

Receiving Yards: 43 (23rd among Rookies)

Analysis: Jarett Dillard is clearly a ways behind his fellow rookie receiver Thomas. Dillard has rarely played and when he does it is normally with the second team. Dillard still has a lot of upside and hopefully as the season goes along he can find a solid role for himself but with Holt, MSW, and Thomas playing well he is unfortunately on the bench for the time being.

6th Round Pick: Zach Miller (TE)

Receptions: 5 (Tied for 20th among Rookies)

Receiving Yards: 30 (Tied for 28th among Rookies)

Analysis: Like Dillard, Miller seems to be trying to work his way to get more touches. Miller averages only about a reception a game which is not bad considering he was a 6th round pick. Miller is a long term project for sure but from the little we have seen so far he might work out just great for a late round pick.

7th Round Pick: Rashard Jennings

Rushing Attempts: 15 (Ranks 9th among Rookies)

Rushing Yards: 60 (Ranks 8th among Rookies)

Average Yards per Carry: 4.0

Analysis: Jennings, along with Cox, easily had a lot of expectations of him when he entered this season. Though he was only a 7th round pick, many analysts and all of us here at BCC thought he might be one of best 7th round steals ever. Jennings was able to beat out Washington for the #2 RB spot and in the small windows we have seen him (namely the Tennessee and Seahawks games) he has done well for himself. He obviously has a lot of room from improvement but he has a lot of time to grow behind MJD and will hopefully get more touches this season.

Overview

Personally I am overall happy with the most of our rookies so far this season. The fact that we have so many rookies contributing in some form or another is impressive. Obviously we want improvement from all of them for they all have their weaknesses but because they are getting so much exposure so quickly hopefully they will be able to continue to grow and become one of the best draft classes in Jaguars history.

Usually there is an average of 1 Jaguar per Pro-Bowl. This year i think we cana get more. All we need is votes to propel Jaguars, Like Maurice Jones Drew, Mike Sims-Walker, Josh Scobee, etc. We need to have the Jaguars represented. This will give us some positive exposure, which is always a plus. If we can showcase our elite, then maybe we'll hear less LA or UK Jags and more Jacksonville Jaguars. Vote, people Vote. DUVAL is going to rock the Pro-Bowl.

Also, feel free to mention any surprise picks of yours, Say you like Cedrick Benson over All-Day or anything of this kind, above the norm selection.

Mike Florio hatin' on Jags once again...

In Peter King's MMQB this week, Mike Florio takes a jab at our beloved Jags. The NFL is intent on placing a team in the London area within the next ten years. First, by playing multiple games there with possibly 2 next year, and more after that. Second, by selecting a team to play there annually, which would allow the NFL to develop a following for that team. If all goes well, then there could be a permanent team established there.

This past weekend Roger Goodell had much to say about the possibilities that exist in Europe. With the Jags current inability to fill their stadium on a regular basis... it is concievable to think that the Jags could be picked to play there annually.

I believe that if the front office can continue on a path that would turn this franchise around then I don't think that the Jags will be a candidate. I say this because since Gene Smith has taken over things are changing. I'm not opposed to the Jags traveing over the big pond to play, but not on a consistent basis. Furthermore, I would not like to see the franchise lose out on a possible sell out at home because the game is in London. I would hope that within the next 3-5 years that all of this is behind us, and we're sitting pretty in the Florida sunshine.

Why we reallly switched to the 3-4

Written by MICHAEL C. WRIGHT , and posted on jacksonville.com, this article's got everything; context, great quotes, stats etc.... Most importantly I suspect it'll give us something to talk about! Enjoy: click here

In short it's explaining that the 3-4 is what we're playing most of the time, and that the switch was necessary due to injuries and roster complications. Here's a few talking points:

Does this switch make "post roast" (AKA T.Knighton) our defensive MVP?

How much credit does JDR get for recognizing what he's got on his roster? Do you buy into that premise that he had two bad choices, and as a result prepping the team to play 3-4 just in case was exactly what you'd expect a good coach to do?

What about the impact of potential/future injuries, post 3-4 conversion? Does that change what we look for in our safeties?

When will Durant be back, and is our LB core really as deep or good as we thought?

I don't think the Jaguars are going ANYWHERE!!!

According to Fannation.com this post may shed some light on the future of our beloved Jags. With impending deals soon to expire this looks to be a more likely scenario. This team is the JACKSONVILLE Jaguars, and when Wayne Weaver says he's committed to this town, I believe him!

Furthermore, I think it is reasonable to believe that the Raiders are a more likely scenario for LA. With Al Davis living on borrowed time, and all the wackiness that has come from that franchise, I think Al may get out while he can (doubt it) or the NFL could pull an MLB and force him out al la Marge Schott. With Ed Roski, Jr. wanting a stake in a franchise, and the financing to go with it, this would benefit the fans of LA and the NFL in regards to protecting the brand/shield.

Also, with the Chargers still in a stadium deal it would cost them alot of money to break their lease. If it's going to cost them $25 million to get out of their current deal...I can't imagine what the Jags would have to pay to get out of theirs. Especially with 15 years left on the deal! Leases are made to be broken, but it depends on what kind of monetary hit you're willing to take to pull the trigger on that kind of deal.

With our current team sitting at 3-3, and a favorable schedule ahead of us...we could be witness to a remarkable turn around within a very short time. By no means, am I saying we're playoff bound. However, our team is improving, and learning how to win. Fortunate coin toss or not, we won the game when the opportunity presented itself. I firmly believe that if this trend continues then the ticket issue will begin to subside, and we'll be able to show the nation that the NFL can survive in a market such as Jacksonville.

IMHO the state of the Jaguars after 6 games

The state of the jaguars after 6 games is right where it needs to be. We are not an elite team yet [any way). We are not the doormats either. What we are is a young up and coming team. We will be inconsistence for a while due to growing pains. Yes we can expect the occasional blowout, by us and to us. When our growing pains are done we will have very good team maybe even elite.
This years draft is the foundation for great things to come. We hit home runs with our first four draft picks and the remainder of the class is getting significant playing time.
Our free agents this year are both teaching and leading our rookies this year.
Gene Smith first year as general manager has shown remarkable improvement on the Team. He has gotten rid of players who do not want to play and were cancers to our team last year. He gave Fred Taylor the chance to get his ring instead of keeping him around another year or two. The proof of how well this team is going to be will be next year. The draft should help us fill a few more of the holes we have. Right now the jaguar’s arrow is pointing up and should remain there for quite a few years.
