Is A Wild Card Enough?

The Jaguars won 24-22. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

Despite the balmy temperature at kick-off, the Jaguars' Week 10 game against the New York Jets definitely had the feel of December football. Both teams entered the game with equal records and "must-win" attitudes that normally don't appear until later in the year. Win, and you're still in the playoff hunt. Lose, and you're basically out of contention and just playing out the rest of your schedule. Fortunately, with post-season hopes on the line, the Jaguars failed to disappoint.

In a game that looked to be slowly slipping through their fingers, the Jaguars were able to rally at crunch time and allow Josh Scobee to kick the game-winning field goal as time expired. With the win, Jacksonville improved its record to 5-4 and remains a legitimate contender for one of the two heavily coveted AFC Wild Card spots.

Interestingly enough, the term "wild card" seems like an appropriate handle for this young, upstart football team. At the beginning of the season, if anyone had predicted the Jaguars would be in this position at this point of the year, I might have laughed in their face. Then I probably would have lectured them about rebuilding.. and patience.. and tempered expectations. But, here we are. The Jaguars have proven to be unpredictable.

Heading into the game New York was one of the league's best defenses and ranked number two against the pass. Against all logic, the Jaguars offense had considerable success, in the first half. By halftime, David Garrard had thrown for 142 yards, a touchdown, and a passer rating of 127.7. He also ran for a touchdown. On the ground, Pro Bowl (Vote NOW!) running back Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown, on his way to becoming the only 100-yard rusher that the Jets allowed this season.

Photo: Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew, left, runs for a touchdown as New York Jets' Dwight Lowery (21) pursues during the first quarter Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in East Rutherford, N.J. (AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

Even more surprising than the offense was the performance of the defense. In its first true test after switching base schemes, the Jaguars' more "bulky" 4-3 defense rose to the occasion and proved to be the more successful and natural alignment for the second week in a row. Throughout the game, the front four were able to successfully stop the run and force the ball into the hands of rookie quarterback, Mark Sanchez. The defense was also able to get decent pressure on Sanchez at times and came away with three takeaways, including two interceptions.

Unfortunately, for as well as they played in the first half, the Jaguars came out completely flat in the second half. Half-time adjustments made by Rex Ryan and the Jets coaching staff seemed to effectively neutralize the Jags' offense. Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis was assigned to exclusively cover Mike Sims-Walker, essentially taking the Jags' number one receiver out of the game. Ryan also decided to throw the defensive kitchen sink at Garrard, sending pressure from everywhere but the press-box. As a result, the Jaguars went three-and-out on four of their five possessions to start the second half and fumbled away another on the one-yard line.

Photo: New York Jets' Jim Leonhard (36) sacks Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard (9) during the third quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in East Rutherford, N.J. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

The sputtering of the offense allowed the Jets to score nine unanswered points and take a one point lead (22-21) heading into the closing minutes. For the Jaguars, the game and all their postseason hopes were circling the drain. Visions of meaningful December football were slowly leaving our minds, and flashbacks of the 2008 season began to creep into their place. It was under this sense of urgency, with just over five minutes left, at crunch time, that Garrard and the offense came back to life.

Starting from his own 17-yard line, Garrard completed 4 of 6 passes, including a huge third-down conversion to wide-receiver Mike Thomas and a 33-yard strike to tight-end Marcedes Lewis. Led by their quarterback, the Jaguars were able to march 69 yards, to the Jets' 14-yard line, just as the clock reached the two-minute warning.

It was then that "unpredictable" became an understatement for the Jaguars. On the first play after the two-minute warning, Rex Ryan told his defense to give Maurice Jones-Drew a "free-way". The Jets would "try to make it look good", but still allow Jones-Drew to score. Hoping they would get the ball back in the hands of their offense with enough time left to march down-field and score.

However, Jack Del Rio suspected Ryan's plan, so he instructed Maurice Jones-Drew to get as close to the end zone as possible... then take a knee. Say whaaa?! If you tell me you saw it coming, then you better have fire-retardant pants. I mean, we've seen this type of thing before, but why would you forgo the go-ahead touchdown and six free points? It's a question that sports analysts and football pundits around the country are debating this week. However, in Del Rio's mind, it was never a question. Rather than to take the touchdown and kick-off to the Jets with the issue still in doubt, he wanted to seal the game right then and there. Milk the clock. Kick the walk-off, three-point "extra-point".

I can't say I agree wholeheartedly with the strategy, considering it was a crazy, gutsy, against the percentages, "feast-or-famine" type of call, but hey; that's why I'm not a head coach. However, I feel obligated to mention that Del Rio's decision cost me and countless others some serious MJD fantasy football points! (Kidding!... Kind of...)

Fortunately though, JDR's fourth quarter gamble yielded dividends in real life (unlike this guy's). With 3 seconds left in regulation, Josh Scobee came on and drilled the 21-yard game-winning field goal. Game over. Del Rio is a genius. Or very lucky. Either way, I'll take it.

Photo: Jacksonville Jaguars' Josh Scobee (10) kicks the game-winning field goal during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game against the New York Jets on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in East Rutherford, N.J. The Jaguars won 24-22. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

With a finish that no one could ever have predicted, the Jaguars have positioned themselves to get in the driver's seat of their post-season aspirations. At 5-4 in Week 10, there is no doubt that the Jaguars are playing well-beyond everyone's expectations. But you know what? Forget expectations and predictions. Let's focus on the right now. Right now, the Jaguars are winning games. They're playing with passion. They're putting on that entertaining show that so many people have cried out for. This team is giving this city all it's got, trying to turn nothing into something. But they can't play the games and sit in the stands too.

This Sunday, the Buffalo Bills will be coming to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, and the Jaguars will try to continue their pursuit of an entertaining, over-achieving, "wild card" 2009 season. As of this morning, the Jaguars are about 4,000 tickets shy of reaching their blackout number of about 50,0000 for next Sunday's game against the Bills. If they fail to reach 50,000 by Friday, the game will be, once again, blacked out. People in this town are still searching for a reason to come watch the Jags.

So I guess the question is: "Is being a wild card enough for Jacksonville?"

The 86-year-old Adams was seen throwing an emphatic series of middle fingers from a luxury suite at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., after the Titans (3-6) had secured the blowout over the Buffalo Bills (3-6), which included 24 straight points in the fourth quarter.

Adams apologized in a statement, saying: "I need to apologize for my actions yesterday near the end of the game.
Buzzing to Go Nuts in the Jack this Sunday! Are you with me?

Hello to all at BCC.

We're all impressed aren't we? My hands are shaking with anticipation and can't wait to get into the Jack this Sunday and root for our fighting Jags! And now are you with me? Let's show our thanks for the efforts of our players and be there loud and proud to send T.O. and the ailing Bills home with a loss.

So, some key points from this Sunday's game:
1. Garrard and MJD: Our stalwarts. These guys can control the pace of the game when firing on all cylinders.
2. Receiving Corps: Holy molasses! Fun to watch and great hands, even Marcedes Lewis looked like a top pick.
3. Back to Basics: Welcome home 4-3. Please don't leave us again.
4. Coaching: All those calling for heads, please remain seated. Del Rio has reasserted control and the players are responding.
5. Tears for Dillard: J. Dillard is a competitor and I feel for him and his broken ankle. Baby Holt will have to come back next season, and we all wish him a trouble-free return to health.
6. Scobee, Calm: It was just an extra point, but my nuts were on the floor. He booted it through like a pro.
7. Rookies: Can't say enough. Just speechless at the clutch play we're getting from this draft class.
8. Groves: I'm guessing he's not a good dancer.

Ok all. Let's agree this season is way more fun than we could have expected. So take advantage of the fever, the weather, and a group of young players who are frothing at the mouth for more wins.

We'll see you in the seats on Sunday. Go Jags! Onward to 6-4!

The Jags and the Playoffs

I think the Jags have a very good chance at claiming a playoff spot. As it stands now, with a win over Buffalo next weekend, Jacksonville will claim at least the 6th seed in the conference (Denver and SD are playing each other). The last wild card should come down to either the Jags, Denver, Ravens, Texans, Jets and Dolphins. The Ravens have some tough games coming up, including the Steelers twice and the Colts. The Texans still have games with Colts and Titans, along with the Dolphins and Jags. Miami has NE, Houston and Pittsburgh at home with Panthers, Jags, and Titans on the road. Without Ronnie Brown I think they are done, as of now he has a sprained ankle and is likely out for Thursday's game at Carolina.. Jets have Panthers, Falcons and Cincinnati at home with games at NE and Indy! I think the most important games for the Jags will be the Texans and Dolphins. With wins in those two games, they will own head to head against the Jets, Dolphins, and Texans. With wins over Buffalo and Cleveland it will give them at least 9 wins. Even with losses in the other games, it would give the Jags a 3-3 division record and an 8-4 conference record. After looking at each teams schedule, I don't think it would take 10 wins this year to get in. For that to happen, Houston or Baltimore would have to go 5-1 (giving the Ravens a win tonight), or Miami and the Jets would have to go 6-0. Either Denver or San Diego would have to go 4-2, which I think SD will do. That will give them the West, so Denver would need to go 4-1 (if SD does win next week) and the way they are playing I don't see that, especially with their remaining schedule (NYG, @Indy, @ Philly).

It should be an interesting 8 weeks. Get to the stadium and cheer for your team. I've been pretty lonely sitting in sec 243 all year!

Jaguars Fans on This Site: All week Jaguars fans graced us with their presence here on GGN, and I can't say enough about them. They were classy, knowledgable, and added a lot to our discussion here. In the year and change I've run this blog, I've come across some great fan bases. The Bills and Texans come to mind. The Jaguars fans we came across this week top the list. Congrats on the win. Good luck the rest of the way. Please do continue to stop by.

Halftime Adjustments: The Jets played much more inspired football in the second half.

Other Thoughts:

You really can't say enough about Maurice Jones-Drew. It's been a long time since a football player impressed me like he did today. He's the total package. He's got speed and vision. He hits hits holes. He's bruising between the tackles. He's a threat as a receiver. He blocks well. He's got football intellect and is selfless like when he went down on the 1 instead of padding his stats with a touchdown so the Jets wouldn't have a chance to get the ball back. He was the difference.

David Garrard also gets props. He made the plays on that last drive.

It's funny how things even out. Two weeks ago, the Jets pretty much manhandled the Dolphins but essentially handed them the game by making silly errors. This week, the Jags really had the better of the play for most of the game, but a missed field goal, a guy tripping himself going into the end zone, and a botched exchange from the one foot line were enough to almost gift wrap the Jets a win.

I find this a bit easier to swallow than the Miami game. It's one thing when the opponent plays better than you like the Jaguars did. It's another to constantly shoot yourself in the foot like the Jets did two weeks ago. There was no doubt the Jaguars were the better team today.

It's frustrating because it's clear the Jets are on the verge of being a good team, but they just can't finish games. Kind of like Mark Sanchez. He makes plays that show the ability is there, but it just hasn't all come together yet.

Explanation of my bold prediction

I made a bold prediction before the game started. I not counted for a win. But I back my words; so I explain why made that (veeeery bold) prediction. You can call it unrealistic; stupid or else. To be clear; I still consider myself the "Patience" guy who will be happy with an 8-8 record. But I must stay true what I opredicted; so here is my thesis and explanation. I wrote that to the game preview topic just before the kickoff:
Now here is my bold/stupid statement of 2009:

IF THE JAGUARS WIN THIS GAME THEY WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!

And here is why(game by game discrition)

1. game: Bills. Sure Buffalo have the offensive firepower( Lee Evans; Marshawn Lynch; Fred Jackson and the ticking timebomb) Bu the QB Trent Edwars is not playing his best football yet. Also they are dead last against the rush. So if Maurice put120+ yards on the Jes defense; imagine what he will do with them. And if they loading the box; then it will be David Garrard pass to-Mike Sims Walker; -Torry Holt; -Mike Thomas; -Tiquan Underwood; -Marcedes Lewis; -Zach Miller. I know how great the rookie Jarius Byrd is; but he can't cover anyone. And it will be nice seeing Drayton Florence again... (prediction: win; record 6-4)

2. Game: San Fransisco. I know many fear a lot of this game. Trip to the west; etc. I have my concerns. BUT! I see these 49ers this week. They are everything but unbeatable. Jay Cutler threw 5 picks and almost won that game! There defense is good; but not better then the Jets D. They good against the run; but terrible gainst the pass-although I wanna see how they handle the redhot Maurice Jones Drew. You need to limit Patrick Willis. You need to do it with Frank Gore too. Michael Crabtree is very good; Vernon Davis is a threat. But there QB no matter if it's Shaun Hill or Alex Smith is everything but good. Also Coach "samurai" Mike Singeltary is overrated. He is a good defensive mind; but not a good head coach. He is a less good version of Jack Del Rio! (prediction: win; record 7-4)

3. game Houston. Big Game. Matt Schaub is on fire. But he has only 1 real receiver left and that is Andre Johnson. If you can limit him; like the Jags do on Week 3; you almost pull out a victory. There defense is still stinks no matter how good Brian Cushing will play. The Jags will beat them in a very hard fought game. (prediction: win; record 8-4)

4. game Miami. Another HUGE game against the Dolphins. if my prediction is correct the jags will be redhot now. It will be a "run the ball; stop the run" game with lot of tricky plays. The Jaguars need all their power to win it. But I think front off an almost soldout stadium; they will do; and run away with a W in the end. (prediction: win; record 9-4)

5.game Indianapolis. Now here is my boldest prediction of the whole post. The Jaguars will beat the Colts. How?-you might you ask it. I tell you.. If the Colts need to win this game yet(not clinched hoime field advantage for the playoffs)- Peyton Manning will playing with our secondary. and might tear them aapart. But so will do the Jags runshing attack with there ravaged defense(they are already without Sanders). The Jags could play with Indy when they were really bad (2 games of 2008.one win; one almost win-from team that was much worse then this-1 game this year; smallest margin of defeat yet!))The Jags will make here a huge upset and statement. (prediction: win; record 10-4)

6.game New England. Now we don't win this one. This is too high order. We have no luck against Brady and co. I think it will remain this year too. All I hope is very close game; and seeing Fred on the field. (prediction: loss; record 10-5)

7.game Cleveland. Hey with all the respect it is Cleveland under head coach "Total Disaster" Switch off joshua Cribbs-scor early; and rest the core players-to stay healthy (prediction: win; record 11-5)

We have a lots off tiebraker vicotries if this happen; so I don't think we will share the fate of the '08 patriots. Jags will go to the wild card; and will play against the Broncos/Steelers

So here is my BOLD prediction. This is NOT the usual "post victory over the top" article. I'm still the patience guy. I still stick with 8-8 good season thing. I know it is rebuilding. (By the way the Jags have equally wins on Week 10 then after week 17 last year...)But I made a bold prediction and back my words with this.

Debate it; call it waaaay to optimistic; feel free for do that. But after a huge win like this I'm telling you:
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!!!!!! Including this prediction will becoming the reality!

Zoltan Paksa (the BOLD ONE)

An evaluation of Riley Skinner

By request of Collin and out of sheer boredom while I should be writing a paper, I’ve decided to write an evaluation of Riley Skinner. Don't take this as a sign I'm looking past the season to the draft, once again, I'm just extremely bored.

I've watched Skinner for his entire career at Wake so I thought I'd give you some info on a player you probably haven't seen a lot of unless you are a dedicated ACC person. He has progressed and matured as a four year starter and has taken a big step forward this year as Jim Grobe has finally let him lead the offense through the air.

He's most likely not getting too much attention because of his relatively small size (6'1" 210) and very small school. He could probably be picked up in a late round with minimal risk (if he decides to enter the draft of course).I've been very impressed with what he has accomplished over the years with not a lot of talent around him, but this year I think he is really starting to look like an NFL prospect.

Strengths:

Accuracy: What he's known for, his passing efficiency is currently about .673 which is pretty impressive. Currently he is the most accurate QB in ACC history. He puts the ball exactly where it needs to be almost all of the time. During his first couple of seasons he was limited mostly to short passes but has since shown his ability to the long ball.

Mechanics: I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more mechanically sound QB in the draft this year. He has a quick “NFL” type of release that looks pretty similar to Matt Ryan. He moves around in the pocket quite a bit, but sets his feet well when he throws. His passes are a thing of beauty, tight spirals with just the right amount of velocity. He doesn't have a cannon like Jamarcus Russell, but his arm strength is adequate for the NFL.

Mobility: Years behind a poor O-line have given him an excellent ability to feel and avoid pressure while always keeping his eyes downfield. He is not overly fast (about a 4.7 would be my guess) but has very good quickness when dodging defenders and is a gifted scrambler when the occasion calls for it. His accuracy does not suffer when rolling either direction, in fact I've heard many commentators say his accuracy is enhanced when he is on the move.

Toughness: He gets hit hard often, but is willing to take big hits in the pocket. He is not rattled after being sacked. He was sacked six times in the NC State game but threw for 3 touchdowns and career high yardage. Has started 33 consecutive games.

Intelligence/Intangibles: He is very diligent with his progressions and rarely locks on to one target. He doesn't make dangerous passes often and has very good instincts regarding when to use his check downs and when to throw it away. He knows his limitations well and rarely “forces” passes.

Skinner can run the two minute drill better than just about any QB I have ever seen. If you have 360, watch the replay of his last drive to tie the BC game to see what I mean. He has 7 career game winning drives in the 4th quarter and a whole lot more game tying 4th Q drives. He's also a very smart guy graduating from the business school this semester which is one of the toughest in the country.

Negatives:

Size: Obviously, at 6'1" 210 he is smaller than most NFL QB's (But about the same as Drew Brees). This means he needs to step up in the pocket more often and might be more susceptible to deflections at the line of scrimmage (although this hasn't been an issue at Wake). His agility allows him to escape pass rushers often, but if a d-lineman gets two hands on him, he goes down pretty easily so no Big Ben type antics.

Footwork: His feet move around a lot and sometimes he can be a bit jumpy. It’s an odd looking habit but does not seem to affect his ability to get his feet set and make good throws.

When it rains it pours: Though he seems to have broken himself of this habit this season, in the past couple of years early mistakes seemed to get to him mentally and affect him throughout the game. So once he made one crucial error he had a hard time shaking it off and getting back into a good rhythm. This typically only happened once per season but it was pretty bad particularly in the Navy game last year. But I reiterate, haven't seen any signs of this this season.

Sometimes he has a tendency to hold the ball for too long not unlike Garrard, which has resulted in some nasty hits and fumbles.

He takes about 2/3rds of his snaps out of the shotgun so an NFL offense would be a bit of a transition but that’s the case with many college QB’s.

I can't find many good clips on him, but here are a few.

Nice pass on the run

A beauty to Chris Givens

A nice fade

Stepping up in the pocket

These are highlights of Skinner throwing to DJ Boldin who was a yac type of guy so they are mostly dink and dunk. Best plays at 0:33, 3:10, and 5:45

Skinner would be a nice pickup in the 4th round or later or even an FA signing. I think he has the potential to be an NFL starter, but at the very least his intelligence and experience would make him an excellent backup or PS QB. Here’s what Gene Frennette thinks of him. .

Now that I’ve wasted a good 45 minutes and given more information than anyone wanted, it’s time to get back to studyin’

Keeping the Jags here in Jax

I know that this is a tired old theme, but it's never really been addressed by the team or the City. Re-creating Touchdown Jacksonville is a nice touch, but is that really the answer? I think that I just read the best overview of the problems that the team and the city have - check it out at www.ijax.com under the weekly curmudgeon section, whatever that is.
We need to get serious in saving the Jaguars organization from itself!

Looking Back At My Schedule Predictions: Half Way Through the Season

Last off-season, I put together a post An Average Joe's Schedule Predictions. Looking back at the mid-season point, with the Jags sitting at 8-8, I realize I was way off on some of the game predictions up to the midpoint, but that I was on for some of them. Here we go...

Week 1. Colts.

My prediction was that we would win 24-20. We ended up losing the game, though we would have had a chance to win it had our offensive line been able to slow down Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeny. I talked about how big of an impact the draft choices were going to make if we were to beat the Colts. Eugene didn't have his best game, and the only rookies to make an impact were Terrance Knighton and Derek Cox, who had his first career interception. Mike Thomas, who has emerged as a play maker, wasn't even activated.

Week 2. Cardinals

My prediction was that we would lose 38-34. While we did lose as I predicted, but not quite as close. We struggled most of the game, and Nate Hughes let any chance at a comeback we had slip through his hands.

Week 3. Texans

My prediction was that we would lose 21-17. We ended up pulling this one out because of the nice addition of Mike Thomas, and a new wrinkle to the playbook. I spoke of how the Texans' running game would complement their passing game all too well. Turns out their running game allowed us to win.

Week 4. Titans

My prediction was that we would win 14-10. I was right, but boy was I wrong. We ended up humiliating Tennessee with our passing game.

After four games, while I didn't predict the games we would win/lose quite right, I did call our record at 2-2 after four games. Remember the pre-season plan was to weather the first four games...

Week 5. Seahawks

I predicted we would win this game 21-20. No comment.

Week 6. Rams

I said we would win this one 35-17. We won, but it was a little closer than that because of mistakes that kept St. Louis in the game the whole time. We ended up going into overtime, and winning with a Scobee field goal. We could have easily blown this team out, both our time of possession and total yards were nearly double that of St. Louis.

Week 7. Bye Week

Week 8. Titans

I predicted we would lose this gritty one 17-16. I got the loss right, but I wish we could have lost by one point. Instead we established ourselves as a must start for opposing fantasy backs...

Week 9. Chiefs

I predicted we would win 31-10. Not too far off until the Chiefs had their little last punch before they died.

After eight games at the midpoint of the season, I predicted our record to be 5-3, and headed on the right track to a wild card spot. Right now the Jags sit on a respectable 4-4 record, especially with our early schedule. I was off a game, but wasn't off about the possibility of a playoff berth. If we win the rest of the games we know we are capable of winning, 10-6, which is how I projected the Jaguars to finish the season, is still attainable. We need some luck for some of the opposing wild card teams to lose, and we may need some miracles to upset a few teams on our own record. One game at a time, and stay humble. Our best days are ahead of us, but that doesn't mean we have to roll over and be fodder for playoff bound teams.

NFL.com In the Cat's Cave

Here's a great video segment NFL.com did on Del Rio and Garrard... I always love to hear the mic'd up players on the field...

http://www.nfl.com/videos/jacksonville-jaguars/09000d5d8141e757/Sound-FX-In-the-cats-cave

What's everyone's thoughts on what went on in the video? Does Jack Del Rio seemed to lax on the sidelines for someone on the hot seat? Or do you think players should be loose and just play?

JDR

Reading Zoltan's post and all the responses I realize how conflicted I am by the issue of Jack Del Rio as our head coach. There are those who believe in him, and those who want him fired tomorrow ... including my buddy's very adamant wife, who I've been tailgating with for 15 years.

I've always thought he was a good mixture of patience and toughness, and never struggled with having a long-time former player -- a "player's coach" -- as the leader of an NFL team. Three or four years ago I had a drink at a Jags game with a former member of the team who told me that the only group that partied more than the players was the coaches; it's hard to hear that and not question the overall commitment and maturity of the staff. But that was three of four years ago. I suspect it's a different environment now.

Last night on the Pittsburgh-Denver game, ESPN put up a graphic of the Steelers' recent first round draft picks. Check this out:

                                           Pittsburgh Jacksonville

2003 Troy Polamalo Byron Leftwich

2006 Santonio Holmes Marcedes Lewis

2007 Lawrence Timmons Reggie Nelson

2008 R. Mendenhall Derrick Nelson

JDR is not going anywhere, not with his current contract and the current ticket environment, so the discussion is moot. But it's a discussion we will continue to have anyway. I guess what bothers me most in regard to the coaching is the inconsistency; we are the Jaguars for crying out load, not the Bipolar Bears. Some years we are good on the road and weak at home. Some years we play well against good teams and play down to weaker opponents. This year we play solidly one week and horrendously the next. I blame that on coaching.

But in my view we should cut Jack some slack, give him a chance to continue to mature as a coach and see what he can do with a decent roster. Vic says it all the time: we don't have the players. If we want to hammer JDR for player personnel issues, fine. But let's give Gene a year or two more and see what JDR can do with what he gets. For some strange reason, I think he can get it done.

Over from Gang Green Nation to answer Jets questions

Hello there Jaguars fans. I'm a writer over at Gang Green Nation and I saw that one of your writers popped over to answer some questions from some Jets fans, so I thought I would return the favour. I know that John B, the editor in chief will be taking part on your radio show this Thursday I think it is, so I'm sure he will address a lot of the questions that you have, but if you want to ask anything then go ahead, and I will do my best to answer.

I'm sure a few of our members will be over here over the week, and please feel free to come over to GGN, we can usually maintain a good friendly atmosphere for fans to discuss the game.

Cheers

Maybe the Jaguars aren't so bad at pass rushing

I'm kidding, they really are, but I did see this article on the Sports Illustrated site. The full article is here, but here are a couple important quotes:

"There have been just 521 sacks in 7,630 pass attempts so far this year, among the lowest rates of sack-success in NFL history, and a far cry from the days when the likes of Deacon Jones dominated overmatched offensive tackles and made life a living hell for quarterbacks."

"The NFL itself deserves much of the blame for emasculating defenses and rendering defensive players second-rate citizens on the field of play .... There was the "re-emphasis" of pass interference that followed the 2003 playoffs. And, just this year, there's the ridiculous "Tom Brady Rule." Between these two officiating efforts, it seems defenders can barely even touch receivers or quarterbacks without getting flagged and fined. Defensive linemen are getting a little sack-shy in the process. Like cattle surrounded by an electric fence, pass-rush specialists have realized that their game has boundaries, boundaries it didn't have in Deacon's day."

The Chiefs set a record for pass-rushing incompetence last season, and the Jaguars seem to be mounting a serious challenge for a new record. Obviously this is only a very minor part of the Jaguars' struggles with getting to the quarterback, and obviously other teams like the Giants and Colts still do just fine these days. I guess it just makes me wish I'd been alive and cognizant of the NFL during the rough and tumble good ol' days.

This topic also gives me a chance to create a poll about Derrick Harvey, since he is the face of the future on the defensive line for the Jaguars. No opinions from me here - I just want to see where everyone stands.

 	<fieldset class="poll-box">
  <legend>Poll</legend>

What is your opinion of Derrick Harvey?

The Eraser

Greetings and Salutations fellow fans,

I'm new to this so bare with me while I become adjusted, wait for it.....there ADJUSTED. I love this site, I've been a long time Jaguars.com reader but only recently discovered this website. I think it's a cool way to interact with fans just as passionate about Jag football as myself. I'm not quite sure what my postings will cover, but lets hope you like 'em.

Can anybody really blame David for audibling into a quick pass at the line when he sees 8 guys in the box on most plays? I found it amazing that we were still running slants as our audible pass play, which was our signature pass play last year. Remember, how defenses sat on that route the all of last season because they knew that was the only real passing threat we posed. Are there not any other hot routes to switch into if needed? However, it sounds like we'll be seeing less audibles this week. All in all I say give the rock to MJD, early and often to set up those oh so sweet plays to MSW and Holt.

So will the play of Thomas this past week forever silence the critics of Monroe being in the starting lineup at LT? Didn't Thomas give up a sack to KVB, his first of the season? I know I was one of the guys early on, who wanted Thomas in the lineup because I was looking for instant results but we see where that gets us. I think this rookie class has performed beyond expectations. We're laying the groundwork for our future for the first time this in ages. You know deep down you look at this group of Monroe, Britton, Knighton, Cox, M. Thomas, Dillard that you get the sense of better things to come.

Basically we don't have the players to compete at a high level. Our offense is coming along, but we're still to raw that unit to carry the team. The defense...well the defense makes me sad....very sad. The once proud unit got old and broken right underneath our noses. It's going to take a couple of drafts to bring us back to where we once were, if we can every get there again. Does anybody else feel that Russell and Nelson should have a fight to the death to determine who should remain on the team? I started laughing when I read that they used to call Nelson "The Eraser" at Florida. "The Eraser", really? If he's "The Eraser" then all our opponents must be writing with ink.

You Can't Draft Ticket Sales

While we scramble for solutions to the ticket sales drought in Jacksonville, a certain bewildered population of nearby football fans proffer the argument that drafting Tebow would be a cure all.

Well, if that theory were true, then certainly the signing of legendary Brett Favre by the Vikings, as a sure bet to propel them deep into the playoffs (which looks like it might actually be happening), would have the same effect there. And his revered status in the mid-West would cure the Vikings ticket sales woes, too. Right?

This according to PFT, speaks to the contrary:
"According to John Holler of VikingUpdate.com, 4,000 tickets remain for November 15 against Detroit, and 3,500 are unsold for the following Sunday against Seattle."

"So even with the Favre factor and a 7-1 start to the season, the Vikings will have to hustle in order to lift the local blackout for games."

You mean, one player doesn't cure ticket sales? That's right. One player, unless he buys all the remaining tickets for friends, will not cure ticket sales. The local community cures. And if Father Time isn't cramming the stadium in the town of his former rival, then it's doubtful that an out-of-position paladin can work miracles here in Jacksonville. Amen.

Being the Devil's advocate-my view on the Jack Del Rio watch

OK; compared the head coach to the Devil is a bit too strong-in many; many ways; but after the loss against the Titans many Jaguars fans including here on this place called for his head on a plate..again. I still don't get that reaction although I share some of the concerns about him. But I still think he can still lead this team to great things. I collected some points which are showing why I think the reaction and the chant to fire him is a bit too early (at least to say). And I offer a maybe unusual way to helping judge his coaching in this season.

1. Talent of the current team

I know you might bored about this; but let's face it. This roster is not on the same level with the elite teams yet on regular basis. We saw they can beat or play close games with good teams (Colts-Week 1; Texans Week 3)But this roster is still having huge holes. If you don't beliveme; then please think about who are the guys from this team who would start in a top teams of the league? I found 3: Maurice Jones-Drew; Rashean Mathis; and Justin Durant. I think 9-10 guys of this team could make the roster of elite teams (Just to name a few: David Garrard; Daryl Smith; Greg Jones; Josh Scobee; he might could be the kicker at elite teams; and from the rookies Eben Britton, Terrance Knighton, and Mike Thomas) But this is not so much. We have major problems because there is simply no one can rush the passer. The Jaguars are so desperate thta poor Daryl Smith is the guy who was sent to blitz lately..Pass-protection is another area where the Jaguars lack talent yet. Although the Jaguars have good corners-the safety area is still a mess. Maybe we have one legitim starter at Gerald Alexander; but other then him I see no solution. And the Jags claimed 5 or 6 safeties and corners during the offseason. Is that Jack's fault? Is his fault that those who are drafted to get the QB are cannot do that, no matter who protect it(a 4th LT activated from the practice squad and the Jags are dead last at sacks...They have 5 sack in 7 games games, no one has more then 1...I'm 100% sure that he teach his players tackle well. I sure because he is very upset about that part I see and hear on and from him. If the jags has the the talent; and Jack is still there yet; he will turn this group of people(I'm mean here defense) back to the top 10. And by the way; which part is the backbone of the defense? The linebackers. I don't wanna steal credits from Mark Duffner for that but I think Jack's hand is one reason why the are the most reliable group of the defense.

2. Don't forget what he archived

I watched the Green Bay-Minnesota game, and I just thought; why is that upset about Favre? Now he is the enemy because he is on another team(Yeah I know the way he got to Minnesota was not the gentleman-like that is for sure and he is currently quite overhyped too says the least...). But he was one of the key of that team's success for years. He lead and won a Superbowl. And although Jack has not that great record and success-but facts are facts his 6 year was not exactly bad times. From 4 of his previous 6 years as a head coach this team was contender to the playoffs. 2 of them he went to there. The first appearance was a small disaster because of his choice to start the injured Byron Leftwich instead of Garrard-yeah that is true. But the second attempt, his team did something no other team done in NFL history beat the Steelers back-to back in 1 season in their home field. Then his team was very close to defeat the New England Patriots in their home too. And I tell you if the jags would win that game, they would have represented to AFC on Superbowl XLI...It's a shame that the window of opportunity closed on that night. We wait and hope to the next opening which will come soon (even with Jack as head coach)

3. Selection of coaches

That is I agree a tricky subject. Jack had good (Mike Smith, Joe Decamilis; Mike Tice) and bad (Gregg Williams; Donnie Henderson; and "fan favourite-including mine" Ted Monachino) choices in his career as a head coach. I'm not sure about the most talked about coach these days; offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.Yeah he blew the last game with not handing the ball to Maurice (if Jack ordered really run in the very early phases of the game that would raise other questions for another topic) ; but no matter how good Maurice is-you must ta least try to be balanced with the run and the pass. Yeah Koetter is obsessed with the pass; but he has a reason to that. In the recent past, when the jaguars running game was feared in the NFL; the Steelersand DC legend Dick Lebeau had the cure load the box. If the Jaguars use Maurice (it seems the only effective runner of the team) that would happen with him again; and don't expect so often a mistackle parade like the Titans defense showed on those 2 beautiful TDs. Which why the Jags must use more the passing game then the running game in my opinion. Or the most ideal would be throw and run about 50-50% But to go back to my point; I think most of the Jaguars current coaches are good guys-I think Monachinois the only one with who's absence is something I would have no problem...Yeah Joe Decamilis and Gregg Williams is left because they andJack were not on the same page. Specially in Joe"s case that is something I really sorry. But If I look at the Jaguars coaching staff jack made expect one guy good selections.

4. How Jack's fate as a coach should be judged in my opinion

This years is will be played by under the word: rebuilding. No matter how tempting is our schedule; most likely the jaguars won't make it. which might come good to. Don't look mad at this point; I don't like to see the jaguars lose either. But they can concentrate to build the new guys to the team; can focus who are the players who cannot help (My candidates are at this point includes Reggie Nelson; Brian Russell; And maybe 1 or 2 guys who are still on the roster of he 2008 draft sadly); and in the end having a top 16 or maybe even Top 10 offense! And of course the basic goals: playing better as a team and try to reach the 7-9/8-8 record. If Jack and his team reach the most of these goals or all; he can and I think must stay as head coach and my trust and support will remain on him.

But I give you another good example to watch for. You know the most thing (other then the passrush-pass protection problems) of the '09 jaguars is that if they lose; I know that around the 3 Quarter; maybe even on the 2nd. They didn't produce close ball games when they have a bad day or the opponent is the better team on that day. This bothers me. And in this area; We have luck to see what happens this year. Because other then 2 (or maybe just 1) opponents (week 15-16; games against the Colts and Patriots-although this team can play close games with indy even if they are not so good) there are no unbeatable opponents of the schedule. So we can see how the Jags lose if (and most likely they will lose games) how the Jaguars will handle the opponents in the second half of the season. Remember; many expert said it that the rebuilding most show the first consistent signs of improvement of the second part of the season. Well I can't wait for that. Because if the jaguars will lose for example against the 49ers or the Jets or the Dolphins in a very big battle; within 2-3 points; in nail biters-I say Ok Jack you can continue your work in 2010. But if we saw the same thing we saw on last sunday or against Seattle or in most parts of the Arizona game; then it is time for another head coach to take over.

So; I stick in the rest of the season with my "patience for rebuilding" point of view. I will trust in Jack; and(unless he not showing consistent signs in the second half in an other direction) I will defending him even if he must accept defeat on gameday until the last game. After that I made my judgement. I think Gene Smith is also looking Jack's situation like I do. I think the conclusion will be the same. Jack has 9 games (more then half of the season) to make sure t me; to you; to the ownership that this team goes the right direction under him as head coach.I think after the final game in Cleveland; we will all know what is next. Until that time; remain critical; but please stop calling for his head. Please stop push the alarm button after every lost game. I will keep saying over and over again my word for the season: Patience. And that is what every Jaguars fan who care about this team should do!

Zoltan Paksa
