Better Know Your Jaguars 2nd Round Pick: Eben Britton, Right Tackle, Arizona

Eben_britton_medium

Eben Britton comes to the Jaguars out of Arizona. Britton played Right Tackle for the Wildcats in 2006 and 2007 before switching to Left Tackle in 2008. Britton was a 2nd team All-PAC 10 selection in 07 and a 1st team selection in 08. Whether simply a product of being overhyped by the scouting community, or growing concerns over his marginal ability to get off the snap and foot quickness, he slid from his mid first round projection into the second round. Britton will contend for the Right Tackle position as a rookie, where those concerns are marginalized. Just as Jag fans want Eugene Monroe to remind us of Tony Boselli, can Britton remind us of Leon Searcy?

2009 Scouting Report: Better Know a Draft Prospect: Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State

Robiske_medium

The Big Cat Country nation has spoked, and with 48% of the vote, the next Better Know feature is Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State.

With the release of Matt Jones, the Jaguars wide receiver corps is reeling. Dennis Northcutt, Troy Williamson, and Mike Walker are the only three receivers on the roster that even have a NFL reception to their credit. Based on Gene Smith's latest statements, it seems the Jaguars will address WR early in the draft.

Brian Robiskie is the opposite of Jeremy Maclin. Instead of using pure speed, he uses sound fundamentals to get open.Robiskie is the son of a NFL coach, and that is both his greatest Pro and Con.

Sure, he is perhaps the most technically sound receiver in the draft. However, is this a case of what you see is what you get?

2009 Scouting Report: Better Know a Draft Prospect: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

Everettebrown_medium

Edit: Sorry if you saw this earlier this morning, I thought I had taken it off from being automatically published.

Everette Brown may well have been the best defensive end in Florida State's long history. That includes players such as Peter Boulware and Andre Wadsworth. Brown is going to be one of the first defensive players off the board and may be available when the Jaguars pick at #8.

Racking up 13.5 sacks ,21.5 TFL, and 13 starts; Brown was a dominant force for the Seminoles in 2008. The big question teams have to ask themseleves is do they see Everette Brown as a 4-3 Defensive End or a 3-4 OLB?

Brown lined up both with his hand on the ground and as a linebacker while at Florida State. He played almost exclusively on the ground as a 4-3 DE last season.

With the Jaguars reportedly planning on using a 3-4 scheme sometimes this season, Brown could be an assest to pair with Quentin Groves. Even at the 4-3, it wouldn't be so bad to pair him with Derrick Harvey and have two young pass rushing DEs.

What do you think of Everette Brown?
I can already imagine him taking down Peyton Manning

2009 Scouting Report: Better Know a Draft Prospect: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

Harvin_medium

I believe it says something about Percy Harvin's role at UF that I listed him as a WR and SBN's player index has him as a running back. Harvin's pure atheltic talent can't be denied. I believe he had just as much to do with UF winning last year's national title at Tebow. However, the question we all must ask ourselves is how does his game translate to the Pro level.

The player many see Harvin as being closest is Reggie Bush. We all remember how Bush was a can't miss guy who would set the world on fire. When Bush starts next season, he will have amased 3149 total career yards and 20 career touchdowns.

Harvin also played in Florida's spread offense, which may have masked his weaknesses and put him behind the curve on other essentials. However, what is the risk vs the reward.

Poll
What do you think of Percy Harvin?
Great player, would immediately help the Jags offense

Not sure: Injury bug and poor route running vs pure skill
79 votes
Overrated player who won't transfer to the NFL

John managed to go this whole article without taking a shot at UF? I'm impressed!

Scouting Report 2009: Better Know a Draft Prospect: West Virginia Quarterback Pat White

Patwhite_medium

Sometimes you find players instantly and they stick with you. That happened when I tuned into the 2006 Sugar Bowl between Georgia and West Virginia. I was expecting a route and when I tuned in, it was 28-0. Except it was 28-0 West Virginia! Since then, Pat White has always been on my radar as a player.

White became the first quartback in NCAA history to go 4-0 as a starter in bowl games, led the Mountaineers to two Big East championships, and twice had the Mountaineers perilously close to National Championship game appearances.

Pat White represents something of an enigma for whoever drafts him. Originally everyone pegged him making a Matt Jones-ish transition to WR, but his Senior Bowl and Combine performance have made some re-evaluate him as a true NFL QB.

What does White offer the Jacksonville Jaguars should he end up in the Teal and Black?

2009 NFL Draft: Better Know a Draft Prospect, Greg Laybourn, Oregon State Safety

After the strong postive response I got from the Greg Laybourn Interview, I thought I'd give you a full in-depth report on the kid.

A few weeks ago, Terry did a report on Clay Matthews and opened the door to a new type of player... The transcendental athlete. These individuals never seem to measure up in terms of height, weight, or 40 time, yet they make a huge impact at the next level. Demeco Ryans comes to mind as a perfect example, although many people said similar things about MJD... "He's too small, he'll never be able to carry the load on his own, he'll always be a third-down back". Yet, the human heart never ceases to amaze.

These players always seem to find themselves in the right place at the right time consistently. Their unending work-ethic and comprehension of the game are their greatest assets. This especially jumped out at me as I was interviewing Greg. He seemed to have a strong grasp of the game of football and his work-ethic is unquestioned. He transfered to Oregon State to play baseball, however, once there he decided he wanted to play football again, so he walked on. By his Junior year he was on full scholarship and was a full time starter going into his Senior season. Greg struck me as a young man with his head in the right place. He's undeniably responsible and is known as a father figure among teammates.

Greg was voted Pac-10 defensive player of the week 3 times last season and was voted to the second team all Pac-10 defensive squad. Here's Greg's response to getting the awards.

“I didn’t even know they gave out awards like that,” Laybourn says. “When I got it the first time, it was a surprise, but a really nice one. My family and friends get into it, and it makes me feel good about the things I’ve done, but I don’t think about it much. There’s more football to play.”

Wow... How refreshing it is to hear a player with a good head on his shoulders. This kid loves to hit too. Listen to how calmly he discusses dispensing bone-crippling hits.

“I’m a pretty laid-back person, but I really enjoy contact,” he says. “People ask, ‘Doesn’t it hurt?’ Not unless you’re in one of those awkward collisions. If you’re involved in a good hit, it’s like a sweet spot on a baseball bat. The big hits, you don’t really feel it. You might as well run at it full speed.”

Scouting Report 2009: Better Know a Draft Prospect: Alabama Left Tackle Andre Smith

Andre-smith_medium

This was originally going to be on Baylor Left Tackle Jason Smith. However, due to the events at the combine I think these two have effectively "Traded places" with Jason becoming the Top Rated tackle and out of the Jaguars reach, while Andre falls behind Eugene Monroe to take the #3 spot among tackles and should be available at the #8 spot.

Because of his two recent facepalm worthy moves, being suspended for the Sugar Bowl then skipping the combine, many have forgotten that prior to that he was a legit shot to go #1 and was #1 on many boards.

Smith was a dominant linemen at Alabama, and if you want to see just how much he meant, just look at the tone of Alabama's offensive line during the season vs the Sugar Bowl against Utah.

Smith comes out of a Pro Style system at Alabama, which as I've said, gives him a better edge at making the leap than Jason Smith or Michael Oher, who were in primarily Spread offenses last season.

Scouting Report 2009: Better Know a Draft Prospect: Pittsburgh Running Back LeSean McCoy

Large_mccoy_conn_medium

Today we are looking at what many are calling Vic's newest man crush, Pitt Panther running back LeSean McCoy. The running back class in this year's draft has had a roller coaster of projections. Before juniors declared, it was being described as possibly the weakest in a decade, then when McCoy, UGa RB Knowshown Moreno, and Ohio St RB Beanie Wells declared, they were described as some of the best prospects ever. Then with their combine results, the expectations have once again hit with a dud.

With the release of Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew is now the man in Jacksonville. However, concerns, both of MJD and of McCoy, may lead the Jaguars to draft him in the 2nd round.

While MJD is a small back, he is definetely a power guy. He runs between the tackles well and smacks people in the mouth. McCoy is a guy who is more suited for stretch and screen plays.

McCoy spent two years with the Panthers, accumulating 2731 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns.
