2010 NFL Draft

Jaguars 2011 Senior Bowl Interests: Day 1 (More Added)

According to Charlie Bernstein of FOX Sports, the Jacksonville Jaguars were seen talking to a few players today at the Senior bowl. Among the players observed, the Jaguars spoke to Michigan State inside linebacker Greg Jones, Ohio State linebacker Ross Homan, and ECU wide receiver Dwayne Harris.

I mentioned Greg Jones in my "Five to Watch" story earlier. Ross Homan, another linebacker, is shorter like Greg Jones. He measured in at 6-0 and 230 pounds. He's an active linebacker with a good motor and is very adept in zone coverage. He's not a great athlete and lacks top end speed, and is a bit small for the inside at the NFL level.

Dwayne Harris from East Carolina measured in at almost 5-10 and 200 pounds even. He's good decent size for a receiver (similar to Mike Thomas) and has excellent hands. He's known as a very good route runner, but his top end speed is a big question mark. Harris was known as a clutch player at ECU often coming up with critical third down receptions.

UPDATE:

Jaguars have also spoken with Oregon linebacker Casey Matthews, NC State linebacker Nate Irving, and Miami(FL) wide receiver Leonard Hankerson. The Jaguars will meet with Washington quarterback Jake Locker later today.

Notable 2011 Senior Bowl Weigh Ins

Photo

Every year at the 2011 Senior Bowl on Monday there are certain players who scouts absolutely want to get a height and weight on. Colleges generally "fib" on their official roster sheets about their players, but there is no hiding at the Senior Bowl. Below are some players who raised eyebrows during the weigh ins on Monday.

2010 NFL Draft: Was Gene Smith Blackballed?

Quite a few Jacksonville Jaguars fans were upset with the fact that the Jaguars were unable to move down in the first round and still select Tyson Alualu.  Now, we know that the Jaguars felt there were as many as 5 other teams who were hot on the trail of Alualu and he was their man.  While the first round move isn't the biggest eyebrow raiser as far as trades, the Jaguars attempting to move up in the 2nd round for Penn State linebacker Sean Lee only to have the Philadelphia Eagles trade with division rival the Dallas Cowboys instead is what looked fishy.

Was Gene Smith blackballed in the draft?

2010 NFL Draft: Jaguars reach into the well with 4 FCS picks

Jaguars 5th round pick, Austen Lane, DE, Murray State

In one of the franchise's most important drafts in history, Jaguars GM Gene Smith seemingly made a draft specifically to give the middle finger to called draft "experts." The Jaguars made the most shocking pick in the Top 10 by bypassing on Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen, among others, to select Cal DT Tyson Alualu.

However, the more surprising part of Jacksonville's draft was the sheer number of non-Division I FBS (I-A) players. The Jaguars drafted four players who played in the lower end College Football's Division I, while no other team drafted more than two.

The Jaguars have always had an affinity for small school talents, such as Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox. However, never has one of their drafts relied so heavily on players from outside Division I FBS (I-A). While some have said the Alualu pick will make Gene famous, I believe if he manages to hit on all of these players, that's what will make him famous.

Draft Grades, a look back.

Since day after draft grades are all the rage, I decided we should take a look back at the past 2 years of drafts and see just how the experts graded them. Again, draft grades mean nothing... but it's that time of year.

2010 Big Cat Country Draft Game: Results

Thanks to those who participated in the contest this year. I hope to have similar contests in the future with similar prizes, so keep your eye out for chances to win free stuff here on BCC. So on to the results:

In third place with 23 points was Zoltan from Budapest:

Zoltan correctly predicted that the Jaguars would draft his favorite prospect, Austen Lane, earning him 12 points. He also predicted that the Jaguars would sign Norfolk State S Terrell Whitehead in undrafted free agency giving him an additional 6 points. Also in his UDFA predictions was Scotty McGee which earned him an additional 4 points. Correctly predicting that the Jaguars would make 2 trades on draft day earned him 1 more point bringing him to his total of 23.

In second place with 25 points was duvaljag

duval correctly predicted the drafting of both Austen Lane and Deji Karim, earning him 12 points each. duval also predicted that the Jaguars would make 2 trades during the draft earning him 1 additional point bringing him to a total of 25 points.

Define the Word "Reach"

In the coming days, weeks and months, Jaguar fans will hear opinion after opinion that rank the Jacksonville 2010 draft class as one of the NFL's worst. The general consensus being that the Jaguars drafted players, namely first round pick Tyson Alualu, that they defined as a "reach." But what exactly does it mean for a player to be a reach? Well the way I see it, there are only two qualifications that could warrant someone being labeled a reach:

"To take a guy you could conceivably get 15 to 25 slots later, you're cheating yourself not just out of sixth- and seventh-round guys, but potentially a late second- or third-rounder. You have to know not just the pick, but the relative value." - Mel Kiper Jr. on the Jaguars' selection of Tyson Alualu
