Mark Lamping Hired As Jaguars Team President

The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Mark Lamping as their new team president according to a team press release. Lamping has previously spent time with the St. Louis Cardinals and as the CEO of MetLife Stadium. Lamping will report directly to Jaguars owner Shad Khan and will oversee all non-football operations beginning on Feb. 27. Lamping spent 13 years as the president of the Cardinals and has been the CEO of MetLife Stadium since 2008.

"The Jacksonville Jaguars have vast potential, and I'm honored that Shad Khan is asking me to play a leadership role in reaching that potential," Lamping said in a release via e-mail. "We have the opportunity to revitalize the franchise and build something special, memorable and hopefully historic for the league, our partners and especially Jaguars fans, who will be central to our mission. My wife Cheryl and I are ready to get started and excited to make Jacksonville our home."

Jaguars Can Roll Over Cap Room

There has been concern raised by some fans with the amount of cap room that the Jacksonville Jaguars will have entering the 2012 offseason. The most recent projection showed the Jaguars with about $17 million in cap room, but as I mentioned before you shouldn't worry. Not only does this projection not include likely salary dumps, but it also didn't include this nugget from the newest CBA.

Under Article 13, Section 6(b)(v) of the CBA, each team may carry over any remaining cap room from one year to the next by submitting written notice, signed by the owner of the team, to the league office no later than 14 days before the start of the next league year. The written notice must indicate the maximum amount of cap room that the team wishes to shift from one cap year to the next.

Many have complained about the Jaguars lack of spending in 2011, entering the season and playing through it with about $30 million in cap room. As of November of 2011, the Jaguars had $32.9 million in cap room, the most of any team in the NFL. Under the new guidelines, the Jaguars can apparently choose to move all or part of that remaining cap number onto the 2012 cap.

Jerry Sullivan Has His Work Cut Out For Him

New Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan will have his work cut out for him when he begins working with the Jaguars wide receiver group. He'll be working with a group that didn't produce a single player with over 500 receiving yards on the season. The team is expected to add some players in free agency and potentially the draft, but for the hold overs there will be a lot of work to be done.

"That's one group (wide receivers) we have to get some improvement out of," Jaguars offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said on Jaguars This Week. "I know Jerry Sullivan will work some wonders with some of those guys, and if we do bring in some new talent - whether it's through the draft or free agency - I think we can get that group up to speed to where it will help our quarterback." Sullivan is renowned in league circles for his ability coaching wide receivers and was even a personal target for Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who requested to his head coach the team hire Sullivan.

Bratkowski Sees Talent In Blaine Gabbert

Photo

New Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski made an appearance on Jaguars This Week on Wednesday evening. Bratkowski spoke on a myriad of different things concerning developing the offense, including what he's seen from quarterback Blaine Gabbert on film. He came in probably in the worst year a quarterback can come into the NFL (because of the lockout last off-season). "He came out of a shotgun system. He hadn't taken four-or-five step drops. He had no benefit of OTAs and offseason. He showed up to training camp and had to go get it, and that's a very difficult thing. He's at the point now where he had that first taste of being under center, being exposed to offensive communication styles and being exposed to NFL defenses," Bratkowski said of Gabbert.

One thing quite a few fans have noticed with Gabbert, Bratkowski also noticed. Gabbert needs a lot of work on his fundamentals, and that will be one of the first things Bratkowski keys in on. "But, really the first thing we're going to be working on are his fundamentals under center until the time he gets the ball out of his hand. He has a lot of work to do, but there's an enormous wealth of talent there," Bratkowski added about Gabbert.

Uche Nwaneri Earns Salary Bump

Jacksonville Jaguars guard Uche Nwaneri trigged a "not likely to be earned" incentive in his contract during the 2011 season. With the incentive reached, Nwaneri's contract will increase from $849,000 to a cool $2.775 million.

Nwaneri signed a five-year contract extension before the start of the 2010 regular season that was worth a reported $24 million. The 30 percent rule governing extensios in the uncapped 2010 season limited how much the base salaries could increase in that deal, so he went from earning a $598,000 base salary in 2010 to $711,000 in 2011.

During that time, however, Nwaneri triggered a "not likely to be earned" incentive that increased his base salary for 2012 from $849,000 to $2.775 million. Future base salaries of $987,000 (2013), $1.125 million (2014) and $1.263 million (2015) are now at $3.775 million in each of those seasons.

Nwaneri had one bad game in 2011, in which he was called for holding multiple times, but outside of that had an excellent season and looks to be a longterm staple at the guard position for the Jaguars. Not only did Nwaneri play himself into a raise, but so did left tackle Eugene Monroe. Monroe triggered an escalation in his contract bumping his 2012 and 2013 salaries by $500,000 ($2.182 million in 2012 and $2.6225 million in 2013).

These two offensive lineman should be a staple on the Jaguars offensive line for the long haul and will be tasked with continuing the team's dominant rushing attack while trying to improve protection for quarterback Blaine Gabbert going forward.

Ron Prince Hired As Jaguars Assistant Offensive Line Coach

Photo

The Jacksonville Jaguars have finished out their coaching staff today by hiring assistant offensive line coach Ron Prince the team announced today in a press release. Prince spent the past two seasons on the Indianapolis Colts as the team's assistant offensive line coach.

Prince spent six seasons on the coaching staff at Virginia (2001-05, 2009). He began his stint with the Cavaliers as offensive line coach in 2001, and added the duties of offensive coordinator in 2003. During Prince's time at Virginia, 11 Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors, including the league's 2002 Player of the Year, Matt Schaub, and first-team All-Americans Elton Brown, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Heath Miller. Overall, Prince helped develop nine offensive players into NFL draft selections.

NFL Power Rankings, The Season's End

With the conclusion of the New York Giants taking down the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, the 2011 NFL season is officially done. We can now turn our focus to things like free agency and the NFL draft. This means there is one last look at the NFL Power Rankings and Joel Thorman of SB Nation has them ready to go. So, where do the Jacksonville Jaguars fall in? Not very high.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11, LW: 27): Another team that comes down to the quarterback question. Let's be honest: Blaine Gabbert wasn't very good, even for a rookie. He'll now have a full offseason under his belt so a more fair assessment of him as a quarterback will come in 2012.

This ranking isn't unsurprising, as the Jaguars struggled to pick up their five wins on the season. They're the highest ranked 5-11 team, so there's that right?

2013 Super Bowl Odds Open With Jaguars At Bottom

The MGM Grand's sports book in Las Vegas has opened betting for each NFL team to win Super Bowl XLVII and it features the Jacksonville Jaguars at the very bottom of their betting list at 150-1 odds.

While the odds are certainly subject to change and definitely will change after free agency in March and the draft in April, they are very much based on quarterbacks. As long as the Jaguars are content to start Blaine Gabbert in September, they likely won't get much respect as far as predictions and oddsmakers go no matter how good Maurice Jones-Drew is and how strong the defense is.
