With the 114th pick, Jacksonville selects Missouri Linebacker Brian Smith. This is an interesting choice as he often played DE in the Missouri system. Some scouts had him slated as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system. In the 4-3 he looks to be a situational pass rushing linebacker in obvious passing situations. Perhaps this is the way Jacksonville addresses their situation at Defensive End given that Bobby McCray is up in the air with his contract and Reggie Hayward is coming off an injury. Adding a pass-rush ILB is an allright stop gap measure to fill in the void of our DE's. Though I'm suspecting that Jacksonville is avoiding a DE in the draft because the front office MUST have a plan for dealing with McCray.
Jacksonville's next picks are the 13th and 29th in the 5th round. They have 8 picks left and have plenty of ammunition to move back into the 4th if they have a particular target. I'd be pleased if they turned those picks into another 4th round pick. A combination of their two 5th and three 6th round picks should be more than enough to move.
