In what can only be described as fantastic news, Fullback Greg Jones re-signed with the Jaguars today. Jones was set to be an unrestricted free agent in a few weeks and is instead going to remain a Jaguar for the next Five Years!
His contract details, per Pro Football Talk are pretty outstanding, it looks like Jones will be the highest paid Fullback in League History. It is a five year, 17.4 million dollar deal with a 2.5 million dollar signing bonus, 1.5 million dollar roster bonus due later this year, and 500,000.00 due as a roster bonus in 2009.
As far as salary goes, it's 525k this season, then goes u to 2.4 million in 09, 3 million in 2010, and stays about that high for the next two years. In other words, it's a typical contract as our front office normally does that front loads as much as possible and doesn't have a massive increase into the last few years to create a cap problem. If you think the 3.1 and 3.4 million Greg will get in salary in 2011 and 2012 is outlandish, just imagine what the cap will be in five years (if there is a cap)
So that's a bit of good news to begin the day. Greg Jones, while "just a full back" is a fantastic athlete and loved by Jack Del Rio. I think his signing is a reward for the team for sticking by the guy through some injury. There will be a day when it's Maurice Jones-Drew and Greg Jones as the featured backs in our system, and locking up Jones now is a fantastic way to head into Free Agency.
Now we need to re-sign David Garrard to a long term deal and a few others and we'll be all set!
