Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Visits: Updates and Thoughts

With the draft looming over One Stadium Place, I though it might be a good time to review the list of prospects who've interviewed, visited, or otherwise had contact with the Jaguars since the draft process began.  Now, my source for this is New Era Scouting, a group that is pretty solid with its information.  Please remember, however, that draft information is always sketchy at best. One site that's been top notch with its information, Mocking the Draft, is another good resource.

There are some other sources who are putting out different names.  Pro Football Talk, for example, indicated that the Jaguars are going to visit with our "favorite" draft prospect, Boston College Defensive Tackle B.J. Raji.

Anyhow, according to New Era the Jaguars have visited or will visit with the following prospects:

Connor Barwin, DE, Cincinnati
Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
Roger Allen, OLB, San Diego State

The Jaguars have had a private workout with these prospects:

Dudley Guice, WR, Northwestern State

Stephen McGee, QB, Texas A&M

Other sites have reported that the Jaguars are also visiting with Jason Williams, LB, Northern Illinois, and Safety Dahna Deleston from UConn.  We've also got the dinner party with USC Quarterback Mark Sanchez to factor in.

What's it all mean?

The Jaguars, generally speaking, use visits to identify mid to late round talent.  A project that I'd love to attempt in another offseason would be to track down the history of visits and compare them to the draft history and see what sort of indications we can pick up as to visits becoming Jaguars.  What I take from this list, albeit short, is that a quarterback will be selected.  This is no surprise, the depth chart behind Garrard (a slimmed down Garrard, no less) is weak and the Jaguars should probably avoid letting another franchise quarterback pass them during the draft.

Personally, I'm a fan of Stephen McGee, though I'll beef up that with a scouting report on Friday.

Other than Sanchez and Raji, the majority of the interest is in second day guys, the folks that fill out a roster and add desperately needed depth.

What's on your mind?

I've got a slow day at work today and I'd love to have a bit of a draft "live chat" over the next few hours.  If you've got questions, comments, or just want to discuss the draft, pop into the comments and let's see what we come up with.
