Jaguars officially in the hunt for back up quarterback

We speculated earlier today that the Jacksonville Jaguars would be in the hunt for a back up quarterback after the rumors of Luke McCown having a torn MCL.

Well, it turns out Luke McCown tore a "CL", his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

It's expected that McCown will be placed on injured reserve and the Jaguars will sign a new quarterback to be David Garrard's back up. Brett Ratliff, who is currently on the practice squad is expected to stay there. McCown had similar surgery on the same knee back in 2006.

"[Brett]Ratliff's going to continue to work at it, and there's a chance, but I would think we'll explore everything that's available and see if there's a better fit," Del Rio said. "Ratliff is learning. He's been here a short time but he is learning our system. Hopefully at some point he would be a candidate to come up and give us a lift. I'd prefer not to have it go that way right away," Del Rio added.

So, who are the Jaguars going to look for?

Good question.

We looked at some potential quarterbacks earlier, but I tend to think it's going to be a veteran quarterback with starting experience.

Here's some guys I think the Jaguars will look at, be it free agency or a trade:

  • Todd Bouman - Familiar with the Jaguars system and has been here before.
  • Chad Pennington - The Dolphins held on to Pennington to mentor Henne and for a situation like Jacksonville is in. Pennington can't cost much, but I still feel he'd be an adequate starter if Garrard is injured or falters further, even with his lollipop arm.
  • Tyler Thigpen - I doubt the Dolphins would let Thigpen go for cheap, but I bring him up because he is who the Jaguars attempted to trade for before they made the move for Luke McCown.
  • Kellen Clemens - The Jets held on to Clemens for a situation like this, similar to the Dolphins with Pennington. He's a free agent after this year, so I'm not sure how much it would take for the Jets to part with him.
Who would you look at?
