Jaguars Fire WR Coach, Move Dirk Koetter To QB Coach

The Jacksonville Jaguars today have fired their wide receivers coach Johnny Cox, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The move isn't much of a surprise, as the Jaguars receiver corps has been woefully disappointing this season and there have been murmors but how bad the coaching was. The receivers route running had been horrible, and Pete Prisco stated on his radio show that Cox had refused to play rookie receiver Cecil Shorts III, which wasn't met kindly with the front office. The Jaguars have also moved Mike Sheppard off of quarterback coaching duties and to wide receiver duties, who he has worked with before.

This means that Sheppard will be pulled off the quarterback coach duties, which will fall now on offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. There had been some talk that Gabbert was being poorly coached, according to Pete Prisco. Koetter has experience dealing with quarterbacks in the past, and often coached them in past jobs. Koetter, as far as I know, will continue to be the offensive coordinator and call the plays, it just means he will work more closely with quarterback Blaine Gabbert.
