2011 NFL Draft Profile: Cam Newton

Alfie's Player Ranking 13 out of 100
Projected Round: 1

Today continues my countdown to the Top 100 draftable players of the 2011 NFL Draft. We move on to my 13th ranked player, Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.

Height: 6-5

Weight: 248lbs

PROS: Fantastic size for the quarterback position. Great athlete who can beat you with his legs. Hard to bring down, similar to Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers. Often looks to use his mobility to buy his receivers time. Has a strong arm that can make all the throws. Has a knack to make big plays when they’re needed.  Ridiculous production in his only season at Auburn. Doesn’t often turn the ball over. Had nearly 1,500 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns in one season at Auburn.

CONS: Didn’t play in an NFL style offense. Accuracy on some routes at times is a problem and can tend to sail his throws. His high completion percentage is inflated by a lot of short quick passes in the spread system Auburn runs. Litany of off the field concerns, including being forced to leave the University of Florida after his sophomore year. Under possible NCAA investigation for taking money to play for Auburn. Poor footwork when dropping back and looks uncomfortable when forced to stay in the pocket and throw. Still very raw as an NFL quarterback.
