2011 NFL Draft Profile: Aldon Smith

Alfie's Player Ranking 10 out of 100
Projected Round: 1

Today continues my countdown to the Top 100 draftable players of the 2011 NFL Draft. We move on to my 10th ranked player, Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith.

Height: 6-5

Weight: 260lbs

PROS: Explosive pass rusher. Quick first step off of the snap of the ball and can bend naturally around the corner when rushing wide. Has pass rush moves at the college level including a nice swim move. Often used to pass rush on the inside of the defensive line, similar to Justin Tuck of the New York Giants. Great size and can effect the passing lanes when he can’t get to the quarterback. Holds the point of attack against the run and doesn’t look awkward making plays in space and dropping back into coverage. Hard worker and a relentless motor. Huge upside.

CONS: Really only played two seasons at the college level. Lacks bulk and may have some strength concerns. Might be seen as a “tweener” by a lot of football teams. Is he a 3-4 linebacker or a 4-3 defensive end? Missed some games with a broken leg this season. Very raw football player and lacks overall technique, but his upside is tremendous.
