With the 23rd pick, the Eagles select: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
The Eagles are desperate for someone to help out in the secondary on the other side of Asante Samuel. Ike Taylor is 30, a free agent and frankly, not that good. Opposing teams averaged 8.5 yards a pass against the non-Samuel side of the field. Jimmy Smith has all the physical tools that make scouts drool for a CB: he's 6'2" and 211 lbs - long and lean. He also has the quickness and ability to tackle that all teams covet in their CBs. He is not afraid to be physical with the WRs, and also handles the zone well.
What about all the "character issues"? Smith says those are behind him, and that he has learned his lesson after his 2 arrests and positive drug test in 2007. He has had no incidents since 2007, and was said to have been one of the team leaders this past season. He describes himself as a "shut down corner" and has said that he is like Nnamdi Asomugha - "but with better ball skills".
If his off the field problems are truly behind him he would be a great player in the NFL, and a perfect fit for the Eagles. He fills their need of a strong CB opposite Samuel, and is definitely the BADB.
