Jaguars Top 10 Draft Busts: Byron Leftwich

We're starting a countdown of the Jacksonville Jaguars biggest draft busts and draft successes. A list like this is difficult for the Jaguars, because of their short history. They haven't even had enough first round picks to do a Top 10 of each with only first rounders, so we've got to mix in some other rounds. To start us off with Top 10 Busts, we have number 10, quarterback Byron Leftwich.

Leftwich was drafted with the 7th overall pick of the 2003 draft class. While Leftwich wasn't the typical bust that's attributed with Top 10 quarterbacks, he wasn't that great either. Byron Leftwich started 44 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars and had a record of 24-20 as a starter, leading the team to one playoff berth in 2005. With the Jaguars, Leftwich threw for over 10,000 yards and racked up 58 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He was released prior to the 2007 season after a strong training camp and pre-season campaign by current starter David Garrard. Leftwich never meshed that well with Jack Del Rio, and Del Rio wanted to go with a guy he felt he could work with. Leftwich has since bounced from the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a starter on downright atrocious teams to being back as the primary back-up quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. While he wasn't Akili Smithor David Klingler, Leftwich simply wasn't worth the 7th overall draft selection. Leftwich was also a quarterback, who required heavy investment that never materialized. He was also the last quarterback the Jaguars drafted.
