The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey as their new head coach. I am told by a source close to the team that Mularkey would like to retain Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker at the same position and he'll likely stay. Both coaches interviewed on the same day. While Mel Tucker has gotten interest from teams such as the Minnesota Vikings for their position, I am told the team plans to keep him on to remain as the defensive coordinator, but he will still interview for other positions.
In 2011, with a freshly stocked defense, Tucker gained defensive play calling after Del Rio was stripped of the duty by Wayne Weaver. The defense ended the season ranked 6th in the NFL, despite suffering injuries to key players that were lost for the season such as cornerbacks Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox. Keeping Tucker on will ensure continuity on the defensive side of the football so the team can focus on the offensive side.
