On Thursday, March 15 Gene Smith spoke to the Jacksonville media one day after he had agreed to terms with Laurent Robinson and Chad Henne and told reporters that there was a "good possibility" the Jaguars would still look to free agency to improve the wide receiver position. It also appeared there was a possibility that the Jaguars could look to find a defensive end on the market to start opposite the newly re-signed Jeremy Mincey
However, eight days later the only other player the Jaguars have signed in free agency is defensive back Aaron Ross. During that time players like Mario Manningham, Brandon Lloyd, Kamerion Wimbley and Mark Anderson have gone off the market.
So with the top of the talent pool essentially gone, is there anybody still on the market that the Jaguars could be interested in?
At wide receiver it's hard to argue that any of the players on the market are starting-caliber players, but there are certainly a few that would be worthy of a roster spot and add depth to the far-from-solid Jaguars receiving corps. Former Steelers WR Jerricho Cotchery, 29, is one of those players that is very consistent and is not too old to make people think that his best football is behind him.
Also on the market still is 2009 Pro Bowler Steve Smith who was a big free agent acquisition for the Eagles in 2011, but played very little role due to injuries. Now Smith, 26, has garnered very little interest although there is certainly upside to be had.
The Jaguars have also showed interest in Legedu Naanee, 28, and Lee Evans, 30, but apparently not enough to agree to terms with either yet.
At defensive end, age is much more of a factor and will keep teams away from anything more than one or two year deals with any of the talent still on the market. Namely former Patriots DE Andre Carter, who has accumulated 37.5 sacks in the last five seasons, will turn 33 in less than two months and has garnered very little interest because of it, despite a double-digit sack total in 2011.
Right in the same boat is former Rams DE James Hall who turned 35 last month and has 16.5 sacks in the past two seasons with the Rams.
If the Jaguars choose to supplement the defensive end position in free agency, perhaps the best move they could make would be to attempt to re-sign either Leger Douzable or Matt Roth.
If not, it's just about time to give up on the free agency market for 2012 and look to the draft to fill the holes still on the roster.
