2012 NFL Free Agency: Saints Franchise Brees, Marques Colston Headed To Open Market

The Saints were not going to let All-Pro quarterback Drew Brees hit the free agency market no matter what and according to a report from Jay Glazer of Fox Sports they had to resort to the franchise tag to keep the former Super Bowl MVP in New Orleans.

While the news of Drew Brees doesn't affect the Jaguars per say, the ramifications it will have on the Saints very well could. The best case scenario for the team would have been if they were able to sign Brees to a long-term deal earlier and keep the franchise tag to use on Pro Bowl guard Carl Nicks.

Now that they have used the tag on Brees, the Saints are running out of time to sign Nicks before he becomes a free agent and the likelihood that wide receiver Marques Colston is a priority on their to-do list is slim.

Colston is certainly a receiver that would make sense for the Jaguars to look at in free agency and even if he is not signed by Jacksonville he at the very least would expand the talent in the free agent market at the position and allow an easier path for the Jaguars to sign a starting-quality receiver.
