With the majority of the offseason in the books, at least with NFL free agency and the NFL Draft, we can start to look at the Jacksonville Jaguars position by position and see what we can begin looking for when training camp rolls around. Obviously the biggest position most people are going to focus on is the quarterback position and Blaine Gabbert, so we'll start our position by position outlook there.
Returning Players
Blaine Gabbert - Gabbert started 14 games last season and had a pretty rough go of it. He finished with a dismal 50.8 completion percentage and passed for just 2,214 yards (158 YPG) for the worst passing offense in the NFL last season. A big part of the Jaguars stepping forward will be the development of Gabbert and how head coach Mike Mularkey and quarterbacks coach Greg Olson are able to work with him. The experience Gabbert got last year, despite how bad he looked, is priceless and should only help him entering this season.
Added Players
Chad Henne - Henne was given a two year deal by the Jaguars to be their backup quarterback and a guy to push Gabbert in training camp and practice. Henne has shown some potential as a starter in the league, but he's never really been consistent with his play. While some think Henne is going to challenge Gabbert for his job right out of the gate, I think that's more of a rush to declare Gabbert a bust than a compliment about Henne's ability.
Jordan Palmer - Palmer was given a tryout by the Jaguars during rookie mini-camp and impressed enough to land a free agent contract. Palmer has worked with Jaguars offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski before, so he's a little familiar with the offensive system. If the Jaguars decide to keep three quarterbacks, Palmer should make the roster.
Lost Players
Luke McCown - McCown was a servicable backup who won the starting job last season, but was pulled after a terrible game against the New York Jets and the Gabbert era started. I expected the Jaguars to bring McCown back for training camp and have him battle with another veteran for the backup job, but he's still unsigned.
Dan LeFevour - LeFevour was a late mid-season pickup that was added to the Jaguars active roster. He was never really going to be much more than a camp/practice arm and was released when the Jaguars signed on Jordan Palmer.
