Yesterday I presented the idea of selecting a seven man flag football team out of the players on the 2012 Jaguars roster. Now myself and Jon Kurland (JPon) are going to go back and forth selecting teams of our own. On the last day we'll see who came away with the better team and the readers can vote for which team would win.
So with that, my first selection for my team is quarterback Blaine Gabbert.
Are there better football players on the Jaguars than Gabbert? Certainly, but I don't know that there's a bigger drop-off at any given position than quarterback so I wanted to make sure I went ahead and locked up the position as early as possible.
Even the harshest Gabbert critics have to admit that the guy has a cannon for an arm. His main criticism revolves around his struggles with pressure early in his career, but I think that shouldn't be an issue in a flag football game where the only thing close to pressure would be a guy counting Mississippis or alligators.
With his pressure ghosts neutralized, Gabbert provides an arm that is a threat anywhere on the field and as deep as realistically necessary. His biggest weakness in the game will presumably be when he has to play defense. That is something that he will likely do a lot better than Chad Henne at, though.
Gabbert's tall 6-4 frame and 4.61 40 time will at least make him a decent flag football pass rusher, or at least much better than the 6-3 Henne with a 4.92 40.
So now that I got my quarterback I'll probably move on to playmakers and skill positions next, but not until after Jon makes his first selection this afternoon.
