Holmes is a Jacksonville native, having played at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville. The 5-foot-11, 184 pound defensive back played at Syracuse and ended his career with 274 tackles, the fifth-most in school history by a defensive back. Holmes was a three year starter for the Orange, playing both cornerback and free safety in his career.
Holmes was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears in 2011 and was waived on final cuts. He was added to Indianapolis Colts' practice squad and promoted to the 53-man roster in December. Holmes was waived by the Colts back in May of the 2012 NFL offseason.
