Will Rackley Injury: Jaguars Place Guard On IR

The Jacksonville Jaguars got their roster down to 53 on cut day, but one of the moves to do so was placing offensive guard Will Rackley on injured reserve, which was a big surprise. Rackley was back at practice prior to the final preseason game, but apparently suffered a setback with his ankle that forced the team to place him on injured reserve.

Rackley is not eligible to come off of the IR list mid-season, despite the new IR rules for the 2012 season because he did not make it to the 53-man roster. In order to be eligible, he would have had to be on the 53-man roster and be placed on IR after Sept. 4, per the new rule. While one would think the Jaguars should just wait the extra days and place him on the temporary IR, you can only designate that to one player each year and Rackley's injury might have been bad enough he wouldn't have come off it.

The primary backups at the guard position now appear to be undrafted rookie Mike Brewster and veteran Josh Beekman.
