Prior to the Jacksonville Jaguars Week 3 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, cornerback Rashean Mathis had been playing limited snaps and coming in on nickel situations to play the outside corner position. On Sunday however, Mathis got his first start of the 2012 NFL season and ended up playing the entire game.
"I was pleased. I was pleased with him, with Rashean [Mathis]," Jaguars head coach Mike Mularkey told reporters on Monday. "I was really surprised that he took that many snaps and he was in condition to take all those snaps. I thought he made a good play on the interception and was disappointed that he didn’t get it. I thought he played well overall."
Getting Mathis back fulltime in the lineup will help the defense improve overall, because if Sunday is any indication, Mathis still has the ability to play at a high level.
Now the Jaguars just need Derek Cox to get in full-time playing shape to retake his position opposite Mathis.
