Bryan Anger in a punting slump, or just not that good?

Among the many problems on the 0-8 Jaguars, their third-round punter is in a bit of a slump. Or is he just not that good?

Bob Stanton-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars are winless on the season sitting 0-8 on the bye week with plenty of problems. One problem they weren't supposed to have, given they sunk a third-round draft pick into "starting" punter Bryan Anger, but on the season so far he's left a lot to be desired.

Some have called it a slump.

"It's been a little bit of a slow start," Anger told The Florida Times-Union. "I've had some inconsistent games. I'm not quite 100 percent where I want to be. I've just been ironing some things out."

As it stands right now, Anger ranks 11th in the NFL in net punting average with 42.6 yards per punt, but the difference in 11th and 21st is 1.6 yards. The difference in 11th and first? Nearly four full yards.

Only 12 of Anger's 61 punts have been downed inside the 20-yard line, but he has the most punts "returned", meaning that punt returners get a ton of chances to run back kicks, partially because he out kicks his coverage so often. Angers 2013 numbers fall right in line with his rookie numbers, actually, with his net yards roughly the same and his punts inside the 20-yard line are actually down roughly 15 percent.
