Jaguars scoreboards: Jacksonville approves $63 million in EverBank improvements

The Jacksonville city council has approved funding for $63 million in stadium improvements to EverBank Field, including new scoreboards and water fixtures.

The Jacksonville city council approved funding for stadium improvements to EverBank Field, including the construction of the biggest scoreboards in the world for an outdoor stadium. With 14 votes for, two against and one abstaining, the project can now move forward as it has funding.

The city of Jacksonville is going to foot $43 million of the project, using funds from the bed tax that would be used for municipal improvements anyway. It's worth noting that this money could not be used for things like libraries, police, fire fighters, roads etc.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan will be spending $20 million of his own on the project, including the Jaguars taking over the cost to maintain the "water fixtures" (aka, pools) that will be built along with the new scoreboards in the endzones.

The project is expected to be completed prior to the start of the 2014 NFL season.
