What's Chad Henne's Future With Jaguars?

Will the Jaguars bring back free agent quarterback Chad Henne this offseason?

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most intriguing story lines facing the Jaguars this offseason is what GM Dave Caldwell is going to do at the quarterback position.

At this point, it is obvious that the long-term answer at the position isn't currently on the roster, but current starter Chad Henne may have played his way into a new deal in Jacksonville. Henne, who is set to become a free agent this offseason, isn't going to break the bank which makes him an intriguing option as a bridge or backup to whoever the Jaguars bring in to be the franchise guy.

Henne's opportunity to be a full-time starting quarterback in the NFL has sailed, but he has shown this season that he is capable of playing the role of caretaker. Even with the lack of talent currently on the roster, the Jaguars have shown this season that they can win games with Henne under center.

Having Henne in the fold in 2014 will lessen the pressure for the Jaguars coaching staff to rush their new quarterback into the lineup if they don't feel he is ready to play. It will also give the Jaguars coaching staff competition at the position, which is something they have preached since arriving last January.

Bringing Henne back would also likely spell the end for former first-round pick Blaine Gabbert in Jacksonville. It is clear the coaching staff believes that Henne gives the team a better chance to win and I haven't seen anything from Gabbert that leads me to believe the light is ever going to come on.

This isn't to say that I believe Henne is going to be the Jaguars starting quarterback in 2014, but I would not rule it out as a possibility at this point given the uncertainty at the position.
