Running back Maurice Jones-Drew is open to returning to the Jaguars in 2014, but only if the price is right.
In talking to the media on Monday following the end of the 2013 season, Jones-Drew said that money was the most important factor in where he will be playing next year.
While Jones-Drew isn't shy about what he thinks he is worth, the market might deal him a harsh dose of reality. Recently, the running back position has been devalued in the NFL and a veteran runner who has had two recent injuries may not inspire a fierce bidding war.
Last offseason the top running back on the market, Stephen Jackson, only commanded a three-year deal worth $12 million. This offseason, Jones-Drew will not even be the most attractive option in the running back market. Guys like Ben Tate and Darren McFadden are younger, more attractive options and before it is all said and done a guy like Chris Johnson could end up in the market as well.
One thing is for sure though, if Jones-Drew does command some sort of inflated price on the market the Jaguars likely will not be bidders for his services. The Jaguars are looking to get younger and it simply does not make sense for them to commit to Jones-Drew for more than the short term at this time.
If Jones-Drew does walk in free agency, the Jaguars will likely look towards the mid-rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft to find someone to replace him. Losing Jones-Drew could also mean an expanded role for Jordan Todman in the Jaguars backfield in 2014.
