With the regular season over for the Jacksonville Jaguars, they can get started looking ahead to the offseason and making plans. One of the first things teams eliminated from the playoffs do is sign players to "future" deals, typically reserved for players who are currently on the practice squad and at times street free agents.
The Jaguars signed 10 players to future deals on Monday, eight of them having spent time on the team's practice squad, one being an undrafted rookie who spent time with the New England Patriots, and the final a veteran defensive back who did not play during the 2013 season.
The players the Jaguars signed are as follows: S Sherrod Martin, G Matt Stankiewitch, QB Matt Scott, TE Brandon Barden, WR Chad Bumphis, RB Shaun Chapas, OT DeMarcus Love, DE Will Perichak, LEO D'Aundre Reed and WR Jordan Sambrano.
The most notable of these is the veteran safety, Martin, who sat out the entire 2013 season. The former second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers tore his ACL during the 2012 season, but prior to that was a solid contributor at both safety positions. It's likely he's seen as someone to come in and push for a backup safety spot.
