2013 NFL Mock Draft: Geno Smith hot new pick for Jaguars

Geno Smith is likely to be a hot new selection for the Jaguars in mock drafts.

The Jacksonville Jaguars hold the No. 2 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and can go a myriad of different ways. A move made by the Kansas City Chiefs recently however, to secure a trade for quarterback Alex Smith, now puts the Jaguars in the possible position of drafting a quarterback with the second overall pick. Prior to the trade, it was believed that the Chiefs would select Geno Smith with the first overall pick, but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

With that change, a lot of people are going to give the Jaguars a quarterback because of the uncertainty of Blaine Gabbert and the quarterback position going forward. It's exactly what Dan Kadar did in Mocking the Draft's latest 2013 NFL Mock Draft.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia

When Jaguars general manager David Caldwell was in Atlanta, the team took quarterback Matt Ryan. Some considered it an early gamble, but it's surely paid off. Caldwell could see in Smith what he saw in Ryan. Don't forget, the Jags have some pieces on offense, but need a good quarterback. Blaine Gabbert may not be it.

Dan makes a great point about Caldwell being in Atlanta when the Falcons took Matt Ryan, because as I discussed earlier Ryan wasn't viewed as a surefire quarterback in the 2008 NFL Draft, but Caldwell was part of the team who determined he was good enough.
