Chargers sign Derek Cox, according to report

Derek Cox was drafted by the Jaguars in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

The San Diego Chargers have signed cornerback Derek Cox, according to a report from Grant Paulsen of 106.7 THE FAN. Cox, 26, was originally a third-round pick by the Jaguars in 2009 and immediately made an impact on the field as a rookie, earning a starting role.

After starting all 16 games in his rookie season, Cox became best-known in his final three seasons with the Jaguars for his injury struggles. He missed 17 games in three years, including 10 during the 2011 season that featured great play from Cox when he was able to get on the field.

In San Diego, Cox will presumably fill the void left by Antoine Cason leaving to reach free agency. While the Chargers allowed the ninth fewest yards in 2012, they finished in the bottom 10 in touchdown passes allowed.

According to Michael Gehlken of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Cox and the Chargers agreed to a four-year deal, worth $20 million with $10.25 million guaranteed.
