NFL franchise tag deadline: Jaguars unlikely to use tender

The deadline for the franchise tag is 4 p.m. ET on Monday, March 4.

USA TODAY Sports

The deadline for teams to use the NFL franchise tag is on Monday, March 4 at 4 p.m. ET, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are not expected to place the tender on any of their impending free agents.

Some thought the team might use the tag on cornerback Derek Cox, but Jaguars general manager David Caldwell told Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union that the team would not use the tag on any of their players. If the team had chosen to place the tag on Cox, it would have paid the oft injured cornerback nearly $10 million in guaranteed money.

Many teams will lay down the tag on players today to prevent them from entering free agency, but the Jaguars will be not one of them. It shouldn't be much of a surprise either, as they're going through a complete rebuilding this season and none of their free agents are necessarily "must keep" players.
