With the first pick of the sixth round in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Florida Gators safety Josh Evans. In the second round they addressed the safety position by taking Jonathan Cyprien, but the depth behind the starting safeties is thin and features everyone's favorite player, Chris Prosinski.
In the Gators secondary, the player that drew most of the attention was strong safety Matt Elam, who was eventually selected with the final pick in the first round. Evans has more size than Elam, though, at 6-1, 207 pounds with 4.54 speed and 34.5-inch vertical jump.
He finished his senior season with 83 tackles and three interceptions for the Florida secondary and recorded one interception in each his sophomore and junior years.
With the Jaguars, Evans should be able to immediately contribute on special teams, while also providing depth at both safety positions behind Cyprien and Dwight Lowery.
Evans is the first Florida Gators player drafted by the Jaguars since they selected Derrick Harvey with the first pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and he is the third SEC player drafted by the Jaguars this weekend.
