The Jacksonville Jaguars have started adding players off the waiver wire on Sunday, picking up Philadelphia Eagles linebacker/defensive end Chris McCoy, according to his Twitter feed.
I thought Chris McCoy was going to make the team. He was a more natural 3-4 OLB than either Brandon Graham or Trent Cole, in that he has cover skills, in addition to being able to rush the passer. It's actually somewhat surprising that the Jaguars picked him up, as McCoy had his worst game, by far, in Jacksonville. He was pushed around in the run game that night. That would be his weakness. I can see McCoy fitting in as a role player who plays on passing downs only, before he can become a 3-down guy. In the meantime, he could use some work in the weight room.
McCoy, 26, was originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh-round of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Middle Tennessee State. The 6'4, 265 pound defensive end/linebacker has also spent time with the Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Calgary Stampeders, and most recently in the preseason with the Eagles.
In the preseason playing linebacker, McCoy picked up four sacks and four quarterback pressures for the Eagles defense, playing with the reserves.
There is no word yet on who the Jaguars will release to finalize the waiver claim, but when it's announced we will update this post.
