Jaguars coaching rumors: Greg Roman linked to OC position

Could Dave Caldwell's former college roommate be on the radar as a Jaguars offensive coordinator candidate?

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't been linked with that many names for their vacant offensive coordinator position yet, but one name that keeps coming up when people talk about the position is San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Roman was a hot name when the Jaguars were looking for a head coach and has cropped up once again thanks to his connection to Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell.

Why would this hire make sense:

Roman and Caldwell have a good relationship and the offense San Francisco runs seems like it would be a good fit for the personnel the Jaguars have. They have a bruising running back, a quarterback who can make plays with his legs and on the run.

Why would this hire not make sense:

Personally, I think people are making the easy connection to Roman that was there from when Caldwell was looking to hire a head coach. He and Caldwell were college roommates and are friends, but he was never actually interviewed for the head coaching position here. It's also worth noting that Caldwell appeared to say he's hands off when it comes to staff hiring.

"Those are coaches’ decisions. I firmly believe that the coach is kind of the CEO of the coaches and players," Caldwell said on Tuesday when asked about how involved he would be in staff changes. "He’ll ask my guidance, he’ll ask my opinion, but I try not to get too involved in that because Gus is really the expert on Xs and Os and our staff is the expert on Xs and Os. I may ask some tough questions. We may have some tough conversations, but at the end of the day, that’s Gus’ decision."

Likelihood of happening:

Slim. As I mentioned, Caldwell stated that he'd leave the staff decisions up to Gus Bradley. There hasn't been an official link or report on Roman being a candidate outside of media members speculating on the Caldwell connection.
