Kelly spent time with Greg Olson on the Oakland Raiders coaching staff, but had been with the team since he was hired back in 2007 originally as a tight ends coach and then as a running backs coach. It makes sense for Olson to bring in someone he is familiar with and head coach Gus Bradley also has a friend he can speak to about Skipper in Tom Cable, who had Skipper on his staff while he was the head coach of the Raiders.
Prior to joining the Raiders Skipper spent time in the college ranks as an offensive coordinator (UCLA), a running backs coach and a special teams coordinator.
