The Jacksonville Jaguars upgraded their secondary during free agency this year, signing cornerback Prince Amukamara and safety Tashaun Gipson. But could they still use their first round pick on another defensive back?
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network thinks so as he's predicted the Jaguars will select Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves with the No. 5 overall pick.
So, what was Jeremiah's reasoning for the Jaguars using their No. 5 overall pick on a cornerback?
5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Vernon Hargreaves, CB, Florida
Hargreaves can play inside or outside, and would provide the Jaguars with a proven playmaker.
Before we begin, let's get one thing straight: Vernon Hargreaves is a good player. Vernon Hargreaves would be a bad pick in the first round. Both of these things can be true. (In fact, Hank Joness wrote about this very thing this week here.)
In short, Hargreaves would not start over either Davon House or Prince Amukamara. They are established veterans. He could compete with Aaron Colvin as the team's No. 3 cornerback and slot corner. That means, at best, Hargreaves would be competing for the No. 3 spot or get slotted into the No. 4 spot at worst.
Not in my America, Jeremiah.
