2016 Jaguars training camp: Observations from Day 5

Today's practice was held on the far fields for the most part, but I was still able to make some observations.

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars hosted Day 5 of training camp today, their first practice in full pads. Everything is starting to come together now -- football is just around the corner.

As usual, I was out there to observe the practice, but the majority of it was held on Field 3 -- the furthest field from the fans. Since I can't be out on the field, it was hard for me to record any video or make many observations. Near the end of the practice, I moved into the season ticket holder's section near the Field 2 endzone, giving myself the best view possible, and made some observations from that viewpoint.

The Marqise Lee injury saga

Marqise Lee was held out of team activities for the fourth practice in a row, which is a major setback for his 2016 season. The expectations and hopes were high for Lee to make it through camp uninjured and to really make a name for himself in this offense, but so far his training camp has been a letdown.

Lee spent over an hour working out with trainers on Field 1 -- stretching and running to try to stay in shape while being held out:

Lee also stayed on the field after practice ended, wearing a helmet and working on catching some balls thrown by the Jugs passing machine:

I was able to ask Lee a few questions after practice, which you can read in my Day 5 interview piece here. There is no timetable for his return as of yet.

Myles Jack looks better

Again, I wasn't able to see too much from my angle, but I was sure to squint my eyes and focus on Myles Jack when he was on the field as the second team middle linebacker. He looked #good.

Jack seemed very comfortable in run defense, as I saw him clog several holes during run plays. As I've stated many times in the past, Myles Jack is extremely fast, and he showed that speed today while filling holes along the offensive line.

Jack also said he felt much improved in pass coverage when I interviewed him after practice. You can read that interview as well as some other player interviews here.

  • WR Marqise Lee (hamstring), out, worked out with trainers.
  • WR Shaq Evans, out.
  • TE Julius Thomas, sprained ankle during practice, sat out rest. Walked off on own power.
  • RB T.J. Yeldon fully participated (ankle).

Play of the day

I didn't get to film it, as it was on Field 3, but Jalen Ramsey intercepted a pass from QB Max Wittek on a flat route during 7v7's and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown. If I'm not mistaken, this is Ramsey's first interception of training camp, and I'm sure there are more to come.

Quote of the day

Linebacker Jordan Tripp: (When I asked him how Myles Jack has performed): "He's looking great, he's taking big jumps, leaps and bounds, every single day."
