Johnathan Cyprien has been a player Jacksonville Jaguars fans have been waiting for to break out since he was drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He's had his ups and downs, but most of the memorable stuff has been the downs coupled with a lot of "meh". Part of that is just bad positioning and mental mistakes and part of that is he was able to fully play the role the Jaguars had envisioned for him in the defensive scheme.
Now that team has brought in free safety Tashaun Gipson in free agency, it's allowed Cyprien to fit into that specific role and it's already starting to pay off.
"I think it's a great role for him. Obviously it helps to have Tashaun [Gipson] in the hole," Jaguars defensive coordinator said about Cyprien's role in the scheme. "You can see Cyp really starting to grasp what we're asking of him. The closer he gets to the ball, the better he gets. He's doing a great job of accepting his role, knowing what his role is and you can see some flashes of some really, really good things."
With the team finally having a trust worthy center field type safety to pair with Cyprien, they can refine his role as the down safety in the defense. He's still going to have to overcome his seeming blood feud with geometry, but so far so good through training camp in 2016.
