Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Kelvin Beachum went down on what seemed to be an innocuous play in Sunday’s 38-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers. After a few moments of Beachum laying face down, motionless on the ground it was clear it wasn't something innoucouse, but potentially a serious injury.
At first it appeared as if Beachum might have been knocked unconscious, but it was difficult to tell initially on the replay and some thought he might have re-injured his knee and lay on the ground in disbelief. From another angle it clearly showed Beachum was kicked in the head as a Chargers defender was trying to leap over him, snapping his neck/head back and forth. It was a total accident, but the kind of thing that can happen in the chaotic scrum of the NFL trenches.
Beachum was stabilized by the medical staff of both teams and carted off the field, though he did not give the obligatory thumbs up fans are accustomed to seeing, leading some to speculate that he may not have feeling in his extrememties. It was reported after the game however that he did, and it was reported that Beachum had at the least a concussion and was being taken to the hospital.
Beachum was held over night as a precaution, but all tests reported back negative and he has since been released and headed back to Jacksonville. Beachum is still in the concussion protocol however and I would imagine he will likely miss Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
