The Jacksonville Jaguars have been — to put it lightly — disappointing in the NFL Draft over the past decade, especially in the early rounds. Under general managers Gene Smith and Dave Caldwell, the team hasn’t drafted a player in the first round better than Shack Harris did in 2007 with Reggie Nelson. (And yes, Jalen Ramsey will likely be better, but Nelson currently has the accolades and a 10-year career.)
There’s a lot of failure, busted picks, and underwhelming additions here — but what if this team had listened to ESPN draft analysts Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay over the past seven drafts? Where would their roster be today?
Jaguars draft picks from 2010-2016
Year | Player | All-Pro | Pro Bowl | Games Started | Current Status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Year | Player | All-Pro | Pro Bowl | Games Started | Current Status |
2010 | Tyson Alualu | 0 | 0 | 87 | Jaguars |
2011 | Blaine Gabbert | 0 | 0 | 27 | 49ers |
2012 | Justin Blackmon | 0 | 0 | 18 | Suspended |
2013 | Luke Joeckel | 0 | 0 | 39 | Jaguars |
2014 | Blake Bortles | 0 | 0 | 45 | Jaguars |
2015 | Dante Fowler | 0 | 0 | 1 | Jaguars |
2016 | Jalen Ramsey | 0 | 0 | 16 | Jaguars |
The best pick from the past seven years is Tyson Alualu, who was a top-10 selection and is still on the team and missed just two games in a seven-year career, but never became more than a good player to have in the defensive line rotation. Jalen Ramsey will undoubtedly be the best pick of this group, but you’d have to look back on it in a few years to make that kind of assessment. And if Blake Bortles is going to get himself in the running, he needs to turn it around this season, or else he’s just one more in a long line of disappointing Jaguars draft picks.
Now let’s compare these picks with Kiper and McShay.
Mel Kiper’s Jaguars picks from 2010-2016
Year | Player | All-Pro | Pro Bowl | Games Started | Current Status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Year | Player | All-Pro | Pro Bowl | Games Started | Current Status |
2010 | C.J. Spiller | 0 | 1 | 38 | Jets |
2011 | Ryan Kerrigan | 0 | 2 | 96 | Washington |
2012 | Fletcher Cox | 2 | 2 | 73 | Eagles |
2013 | Luke Joeckel | 0 | 0 | 39 | Jaguars |
2014 | Khalil Mack | 2 | 2 | 48 | Raiders |
2015 | Leonard Williams | 0 | 1 | 31 | Jets |
2016 | Jalen Ramsey | 0 | 0 | 16 | Jaguars |
This haul would, in a word, be sensational. You’ve got two Pro Bowl defenders in the first three years and Khalil Mack, Leonard Williams, and Jalen Ramsey added to it would be tough to beat. Funny enough, Luke Joeckel — the only pick that Kiper got right before 2016 — is probably the worst of the bunch.
Todd McShay’s Jaguars picks 2010-2016
Year | Player | All-Pro | Pro Bowl | Games Started | Current Status |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Year | Player | All-Pro | Pro Bowl | Games Started | Current Status |
2010 | C.J. Spiller | 0 | 1 | 38 | Jets |
2011 | Ryan Kerrigan | 0 | 2 | 96 | Washington |
2012 | Whitney Mercilus | 1 | 0 | 58 | Texans |
2013 | Dion Jordan | 0 | 0 | 1 | Dolphins |
2014 | Khalil Mack | 2 | 2 | 48 | Raiders |
2015 | Amari Cooper | 0 | 2 | 29 | Raiders |
2016 | Jalen Ramsey | 0 | 0 | 16 | Jaguars |
This is slightly worse than Kiper’s but still a hell of a lot better than what Gene Smith and Dave Caldwell did. Dion Jordan has been a disappointment and we’d be clamoring for even a guy like Luke Joeckel after he flamed out like he has. Khalil Mack would be a playmaker, even under Gus Bradley. And I don’t know how I feel about Amari Cooper over Dante Fowl-bwahahahaha just kidding.
What do you think? How do Kiper and McShay compare with how the Jaguars have drafted over the past seven years?
