If the Jaguars only signed one free agent, who would you want it to be?

It’s not likely we’ll be seeing Dream Team 2.0 in this free agency period.

Free agency 2017 is rapidly approaching! One week from tomorrow (March 7th), teams will be able to start discussing contracts with free agents, although no deals can become official until the start of the new league year on March 9th. As is customary for this time of year, many fans have constantly been discussing the possibilities of players that their team could sign. While that is a fun, and even encouraged practice, it’s important to keep things in perspective.

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of talk that goes something like this: “If the Jags could just sign Kevin Zeitler, Jason Pierre-Paul, Melvin Ingram, Tony Jefferson, AJ Bouye, TJ Lang, and a fullback, they’ll be set entering the draft!”. Sounds great, right? Who wouldn’t want to add all of those players at one time and instantly greatly improve the Jaguars roster?

It’s a fun idea, but it’s a pipe dream.

In reality, the Jaguars will probably sign one of those guys, maybe two if they’re lucky. While I fully expect them to sign multiple free agents, given their large cap space, I highly doubt it will be the top available guy at multiple positions. In my mind, the most likely scenario is one of the top guys at one or two positions, and then lower-level guys at the other spots. This offseason is interesting, because Tom Coughlin will be calling all the shots, so we don’t really have a true idea of how he will approach it. However, the Jaguars under Dave Caldwell the past few years have shown the tendency to go all-out for their top target (Julius Thomas, Malik Jackson), and then circle back for lesser priority guys.

With that in mind, I’d like to ask your opinion. If the Jaguars could only sign one free agent, and one free agent only, who would you want it to be? Would you want one of the top guards, like Zeitler from Cincinatti? Would you prefer a top corner, like Bouye of the Texans? Or would you take one of the top pass rushers, Pierre-Paul of the Giants or Ingram from the Chargers? Maybe you have someone else in mind entirely; either way, let us know in the comments!
