2017 NFL free agency: Jamaal Charles released by Chiefs

Adrian Peterson? No. Jamaal Charles? No.

NFL: New Orleans Saints at Kansas City Chiefs Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The free agent market for running backs got a little heavier today, as Adrian Peterson’s 2017 option was not picked up by the Minnesota Vikings.

No, the Jaguars shouldn’t sign him.

Then, the Kansas City Chiefs, unsurprisingly, released Jamaal Charles a couple hours later. The 30 year old, former game changing running back, has dealt with injuries during the majority of his career, and simply doesn’t appear healthy enough to be “the guy” for any team.

That being said: The Jaguars shouldn’t target Charles either.

In 2015, Charles only played in five games before tearing his ACL and missing the rest of the season. In 2016, Charles only played in three games and totaled 12 carries for 40 yards. He never seemed to have recovered from his ACL tear, and had a second surgery on the same knee during the season. He was placed on the injured reserve on November 1st.

Charles’ career stats are nice: 9717 scrimmage yards and 64 total touchdowns. However, he’s simply not the player he used to be due to his injuries.

So, before anyone starts hyping Jamaal Charles or Adrian Peterson to the Jaguars: Nah.
