The New York Giants signed defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to a reported four-year, $68 million contract with $54 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Jacksonville Jaguars were tied to Pierre-Paul before free agency began, but when Pierre-Paul was franchise tagged by the Giants those rumors dissipated.

And thank God they did.

The Jaguars were setting up for a potential run at Pierre-Paul. They let go of Jared Odrick, they were clearing cap space, and having Pierre-Paul’s head coach in Tom Coughlin leading the front office didn’t hurt.

But $54 million guaranteed? $68 million in the total contract. Goodness gracious, no.

Pierre-Paul is a good player. He’s a great player. He would have made the Jaguars better immediately. Besides quarterback, a guy opposite pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue was probably the Jaguars’ biggest need. But that’s too much money tied up in a guy who, in all likelihood, will begin to fall off in Year 3 of his contract.
