The Jacksonville Jaguars have picked Illinois defensive end Dawuane Smoot in the third round. The team decided to finally add a player on the defensive side of the football, picking a Big Ten pass rusher in the 2017 NFL Draft. Smoot should end up competing at weakside end for the Jaguars, getting snaps on some passing downs.
At 6-foot-3-inches and 264 pounds with long arms, it's likely that he will play weakside end as a pass rusher. Smoot has flashed some good speed-to-power rush moves, as well as a rip move, but he will still need to improve his rush off the edge on the next level.
At the NFL combine Smoot tested out as an average athlete, but there are some pass rushing tools there that the Jaguars can develop to turn Smoot into an effective depth rusher. Smoot can sometimes get over power by big offensive tackles, so he could have some issues at the NFL level in the run game.
