Telvin Smith not happy with where Jaguars are at

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars-OTA Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars continued organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, picking up where they left off after Week 1. The first week of OTAs didn’t seem to do much to impress head coach Doug Marrone and from the sounds of it, the disappointment continued on Tuesday afternoon.

“Honestly, and that’s why I said I’m heated. It’s not because of the sun, not because of the weather. It’s just because where we’re at as a team,” Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith said when asked if the team was further along as people think. “With the players that we have, I just think, as a team, we should be further than where we are. As players, we have to do our part in the sense that, it’s not scheme, it’s none of that. What do we want? What do we want our mentality to be?”

While it is only May, it is interesting that after about four practices there are already some concerns on how the team has looked playing against air a lot of the time. Typically defenses are quicker to get up to speed than offenses, and we don’t know if this was just because of somethings that happened in Tuesday’s practice or over the course of the four practices so far, but Smith clearly isn’t happy with where the team as a whole is.

“Just our mentality. The mindset of this team,” Smith said when asked where the team is behind at. “The things that we should be using to beat opponents are beating us.”

Smith was asked what those things were exactly or if it was something about the intensity of the defense, but he declined to comment further on the issue and said he would just “leave it right there.”

Most fans assume the defense is going to be at least as good as it was last season, more often the belief is it will be better, but there’s still the chance it could fall back to be an average type defense. That could be potentially devastating if that’s the case, but hey...

It’s only May. I don’t think it’s time to panic.

It is interesting, however.
