With just 85 days until kickoff, let’s debate which backup tight end you’d rather have on the Jacksonville Jaguars — Rich Griffith or Nic Jacobs?
Rich Griffith (1995-2000)
First, let’s get this out of the way — even though Ernest Wilford wore No. 85 in his second stint with Jacksonville, we’re counting him as a No. 19. Now let’s talk about Griffith, who was with the inaugural 1995 team, contributed on offense and special teams during the height of the franchise in the late 1990's, racked up 21 receptions for 296 yards, and retired after six seasons in Jacksonville. He was also the team’s inaugural long snapper.
Nic Jacobs (2014-2015)
Jacobs is a big, bruising tight end. He's not a pass-catching threat, although he was called upon to do it a few times in 2014 (and even got a touchdown out of the deal). He went undrafted in 2014, was signed by the New Orleans Saints, released, and then signed by the Jaguars, who needed someone to provide depth at tight end and who could block. Perfect for the 6'5", 269 pound Jacobs who finished his career in Jacksonville with three catches, 22 yards, and (unlike Griffith) a touchdown.
