With just 97 days until kickoff, let’s debate which No. 97 you’d rather have on your team — Reggie Hayward or Renaldo Wynn?
Renaldo Wynn (1997-2001)
Renaldo Wynn had the longevity (and was named to the NFL's 1997 All-Rookie Team) and the hype (he was selected No. 21 overall after the Jaguars’ miraculous 1996 season). He finished his rookie year with 60 tackles, two tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery. Wynn got more productive as he went on in his career and settled into a hybrid defensive end / defensive tackle hybrid, finishing with five sacks and one forced fumble in his 2001 season — his final year with the team.
Reggie Hayward (2005-2009)
I think the most talented of the bunch has to be Reggie Hayward. His 2005 season (33 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and six pass deflections) was the best of anyone to play in the No. 97 jersey. However, he unfortunately suffered two season-ending injuries in his five-year career with the Jaguars, or else he would be more favorably remembered.
Roy Miller (2013-2016)
The Jaguars opted to go with Abry Jones over his more veteran counterpart in Roy Miller this offseason, which is the right move — but Roy Miller is one of the best run defenders this team has seen in recent years. His box score stats aren’t going to be impressive, but if you watched any games in the Gus Bradley Era, you’ll know that Miller was the most important player when it came to run defense.
