What’s the biggest roster decision facing the Jacksonville Jaguars?
ESPN’s Field Yates believes it’s Blake Bortles. Do the Jaguars re-sign him? Do they let his fifth-year option play out? What’s the line where this front office would let him go and take their chances with a free agent quarterback or invest in the 2018 NFL Draft?
Here’s what Yates had to say:
Jacksonville Jaguars
All about Bortles. The Jaguars in May exercised the 2018 fifth-year option on quarterback Blake Bortles, but that price tag of over $19 million is not fully guaranteed until the first day of the 2018 league year. If Bortles repeats his 2016 performance this season, it's difficult to envision the Jaguars continuing forward with him as the starter, especially at that price tag. If he steadies his game and makes notable strides, however, Jacksonville then must decide if a contract extension after this season makes sense. No matter what, though, Bortles is the pivot player for this franchise, which has added talent across the board at other positions.
There’s no more important position in professional sports than the quarterback. If you’re unsure if your guy is the guy, he’s the biggest roster decision you’re facing. Period.
What are Bortles’ expectations going into 2017? What does he have to do to keep his job long-term?
What do you think? Is there a bigger roster decision on the Jaguars right now? Or does it begin and end with Bortles?
