Doug Marrone concerned with Blake Bortles performance

The Jacksonville Jaguars hit the practice field for their second padded practice of 2017 training camp, and the hopes are that quarterback Blake Bortles bounces back from his awful showing on Saturday evening. As we all know by now, Bortles three five interceptions in practice, and by all accounts they were due to bad decisions rather than tipped passes or things like that.

It’s fair to be concerned with that kind of performance, especially if he doesn’t bounced back on Monday. Even Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone admitted that days like that can be concerning.

“I think anytime someone doesn’t perform to what you want to do, you are concerned about it. He’s not the only one that’s out there,” Marrone said on Saturday evening when asked if he was concerned about Bortles. “There were some good things. Obviously today was the first time in third down. We’re going to look at it, we’re going to look at those plays. If there’s any struggles and things we don’t like, then we’re going to be smart enough to throw that crap out.”

It’s not time to claim the season over and Bortles a total lost cause, because it is just one practice. Guys have bad days sometimes in practice and you can’t make too much of it, unless it becomes a pattern and bleeds to being more than just one practice, but multiple days.

But, it also isn’t just one practice. It would be easier to write this off as a bad day if Bortles had a different history as a starting quarterback, but he’s shown a tendency to turn the ball over at an alarming rate and suffers from inconsistency. So far in 2017 training camp, even dating back to OTAs and mini-camp, that inconsistency appears to still be the case.

Bortles is entering his fourth season as a starter and at this point, he’s a veteran. He shouldn’t be having those kind of days at this point in his career. That is what is concerning to a lot of fans, more so than him just simply having five interceptions. It’s the fact that those things still happen at this point in his career. He should look good in training camp at this point, if not near flawless.

All eyes will be on Bortles Monday, because it was just one practice... but it also wasn’t.
