The started of the 2018 NFL free agency period is just two days away, but it really gets started today. The NFL recently decided to open up the two days prior to the start of NFL free agency to let teams “negotiate” with potential free agent targets, also known as the “legal tampering period.” It was pretty obvious teams were already doing this under the table, so the NFL decided to simply just officially allow it.
So what happens during the negotiating window?
Teams can start to speak with player’s agents about interest in free agency, however players cannot make visits to any team other than their previous team. For instance, Allen Robinson and Aaron Colvin’s respective camps can visit with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Jaguars only.
Teams can talk about how they’d like to sign a player, but they cannot agree to contracts with free agents other than their own. So for example again, the Jaguars could re-sign Robinson and Colvin, but prior to the start of the new league year on March 14th, they cannot agree to terms/sign with another team.
