It’s that time of week where everyone is doing their prediction for the 53-man roster, so I figured since Ryan Day has been doing them all offseason, I’d swoop in at the last second and do my own prior to the final preseason game on Thursday evening.
Here goes nothing.
Quarterback (2): Blake Bortles, Cody Kessler
Don’t think I need to elaborate.
Running back/fullback (5): Leonard Fournette, TJ Yeldon, Corey Grant, Brandon Wilds, Tommy Bohannon
I think this is pretty straightforward too, but I did notice they didn’t seem to use a ton of fullback in the preseason, so if there’s a surprise from here it could be no fullback. A lot of people have Tim Cook making the final roster, but I honestly can’t remember him playing.
Wide receiver (5): Donte Moncrief, Keelan Cole, DeDe Westbrook, DJ Chark, Jaydon Mickens
The injury to Lee has seemingly made people want to mash both Mickens and Rashaad Greene onto the roster when previously you were only keeping one of the two. I don’t think losing Lee really changes that since they’re kind of the same guy. I’m keeping Mickens because I think he’s a better returner and I don’t think the difference in what they bring as a receiver is much, if any.
Tight end (4): Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Niles Paul, James O’Shaugnessy, Ben Koyack
Again, straight forward. I think they’ll keep four because they’ll run a lot.
Offensive line (9): Cam Robinson, Andrew Norwell, Brandon Linder, AJ Cann, Jermey Parnell, Will Richardson, Tyler Shatley, Josh Wells, Chris Reed
Again, straight forward. Unfortunately there’s just simply not a better option than Josh Wells at this point. I could also see someone like Tony Adams playing themselves on the roster.
Defensive line (10*): Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, Marcell Dareus, Malik Jackson, Taven Bryan, Abry Jones, Lerentee McCray, Michael Bennett, Sealver Siliga
*Dante Fowler is suspended and will not count against the 53
The back end might look a little weird here, but I’ve got a sneaky feeling that Dawaune Smooth and Eli Ankou end up on injured reserve, which is why I have someone like Siliga making it.
Linebacker (6): Telvin Smith, Myles Jack, Leon Jacobs, Blair Brown, Andrew Motuapuaka, Deon King
Like most of the roster, this was pretty straight for me. You have your stock four linebackers and I picked the two I thought has played the best so far in the preseason.
Cornerback (5): Jalen Ramsey, AJ Bouye, DJ Hayden, Tyler Patmon, Tre Herndon
I really wanted to put Quenton Meeks on here as I think he’s been better than Herndon, but all you hear during the broadcast is how much the coaching staff likes Herndon’s upside.
Safety (5): Barry Church, Tashaun Gipson, Ronnie Harrison, Jarrod Wilson, Cody Davis
I think both Jarrod Wilson and Cody Davis find their way on the roster, as both can contribute on special teams and have done well so far in their playing time.
Specialists (3): Josh Lambo, Carson Tinker, Logan Cooke
