Jaguars release Michael Bennett

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars-OTA Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released defensive lineman Michael Bennett, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon. The move was expected, coming to free up room on the 53-man roster for Dante Fowler Jr., who was not on the active roster Week 1 while serving a league suspension.

Most thought the cut would come between one of the fringe defensive lineman or wide receiver Rashad Greene, which Bennett getting a meeting with the Turk.

Ironically, Bennett was drafted in the sixth round of the same draft class as Fowler and has had a rough start to his NFL career. He played 13 games his rookie season, but quickly found his position as an undersized three-technique crowded and then spent the past two seasons on injured reserve. Bennett had a good offseason and training camp in 2018, but again with the amount of talent on the Jaguars defensive line, especially in the interior, it was always going to be an uphill battle.
